1999 Legacy GT vs 2005 Legacy GT

With all the hopla surrounding the new 2.5 GT I began to think back to my idea of putting a WRX STi motor in a 99 GT body to make a Blitzen clone. It would have to have the unique rear wing. I know there is a company in CA that puts WRX and STi motors into any Subaru. I remember reading about it in Sport Compact Car. You can get a solid 99 GT for $6-9k on AutoTrader, not sure how much the motor and install would run. But it seems you could get an arguably better looking sedan, that should be lighter, with 300+hp for less then the cost of a new one. This is up there with my 87 BRAT/WRX idea. Funny how the mind wanders while at work.... Any thoughts on the 99 GT idea?

I don't agree that the '99 GT is better looking than the current generation. I don't care for the one in between the two, but the new one is very sophisticated, in my opinion.

That's why I said arguably. I think the 96-99 is lighter though.

I agree with Pockets. The '05 Legacy's are the most sophisticated looking by far...

However, if I was in the market for a turbo'd 4 door sedan, I'd get the '04 Volvo S60R - used they're already going for 32K at dealers!

PA_SVX, I would have to agree with you as an owner of a BG Legacy, and still in love with the broad-shouldered and purposeful look, it's the best looking of the Legacy brood. No offense to those dropping the big bucks for the new model, or the Forlvo, but dropping the current 250HP or the STI 300HP sounds like a cheap alternative to another 4-5 years of car payments.
I would have to interject, however, that a few other beefier parts might be in order with the BIG HP mods. Axles and brake upgrades for sure, and this sleeper swap has occurred to me as well, as the last payment goes out the door. $6-$7K is the going rate for WRX power, and I assume we're talking closer to $8-$9K for the aforementioned "upgrade".

Fun Fun Fun!!!

Thats where I was going with my 91 but the wife decided that she wants to spend her loan on a new car instead of making the Legacy a street killa. Oh well miled mods for now.

Honestly, the S60R is in the same weight range as the R34 Skyline GT-R (3600lbs). Heck the best canyon carver out there is the '05 Lotus Elise but you won't see me in line for one - need a sedan (or a saloon as the British say) to haul my family around in...

From the research I've done, these cars are very reliable, extremely quick and excellent in safety. There's also a large aftermarket for the Volvos with simple chip upgrades that boost power by over 50hp (for the turbo models incl the new R).

If my wife and I work out a deal on this house we're looking at, I'll be able to get one as soon as next Spring...

-Chike

P.S. This is the technology that I'm after on the new S60R...

sti conversions with all you need 1799 - 4999

239 for mounts complete motor includes all sensors, TD05 turbo, downpipe with cat, ECU and wire harness. 240 -280 hp depending on the version all are the ej20 t found in japan none of the ej22t or ej25t found in the american market.

DO IT DO IT

i plan on doing it to my 95 legacy (currently used by my sister who needs awd while at school in the wester part of md) but thats 4 years down the road. it needs some body work and paint but it would be sweet.
