I Love what I do 90 % of the time
It pays well enough for me to pay my bills , buy what I want & need & still save a little most months. And If I want time off I can take it most any time with a weeks notice.
What do I do ? well most of the NW SVX'rs know. If you dont, you can figure it out by my name tag on the left. ( & No thats not my Pool hall Just a place with my Dogs name & my online persona )

I work for a company that provides tech support for FedEx high volume shippers. I support 4 different solutions between invoicing to high volume servers to web integration. The required knowledge to do this job is immense. The knowledge required is worth far beyond the $14.71/hr I'm currently getting paid.

I work for the Air Force, and I love it. My job is to work on computers, networking equipment, deployable equipment, and anything else that is powered by electricity Right now I'm deployed, and can't tell you what I do here , but it's 12 hours a day and 90% of the time I surf the web or use my snes emulator. But hey, when there is work to do, it's fun to me

A typical day? I take the rough geometry the designers create in laying out the gameplay and I decide how to make it look like what it's supposed to look like. I have to create most geometry and most textures from scratch. It's the most responsibility I've ever had as an artist. It can take 4 months for me to create the environment art for 30 minutes of gameplay.

This is my second job in games and it's the best job I've ever had.

I share a rather large corner office with five other developers (4 artists, one designer). On my desk are my two large monitors, my Wacom tablet, a TV hooked up to a PS2 development kit, two keyboards and a couple PS2 controllers.
That is an awesome job pockets!

I personally work two jobs both part time but worth about 50 hours a week. Both make $10 an hour and both start at 10:15 am and pm respectivly.

One job is United Parcel Service(UPS) and the other is United Seating and mobilty.

UPS I sort packages as they get unloaded from the trailers and at USM I clean and repair wheelchairs and do most of the shipping and recieving.

Whoever made the comment of these 80k+ year paychecks sound low I make about 16-18k a year and I don't live with my parents

I love my job when I can help and hate it when i can't, I deal w/bs every day for the last 10yrs in the cities vertical tunnels, fighting the urban wars that seem to me will never end, I almost lost my life on the job, I have watched babies grow up to be killers, been in the middle of gang wars, survived several shoot outs, observed drug abuse, what ever you can imagine, see it all and right now I'm tired of my D job, we really don't get payed enough. No one likes us , until some shhhhh jumps off, but I just keep in my mind wife-n-kids, bills have to be payed 10 more yrs an I can get out.

i'm with larry in that i used to love it, but after 30+ years... i am a solo practicioner in the law business, doing sort of routine stuff that most come in contact with, domestic, some criminal, will drafting, estates, etc. over the years, as a generalist, done a bunch of things from adoption to personal injury to zoning. those who think all lawyers make alot of bucks are misinformed. while many do, never generalize. beleive me, while there were years i did reasonably well that has often not been the case, and it doesn't come every two weeks. on the other hand, nobody tells me when to take lunch or vacation, even though i don't think i ever took more than a week or so off at one time over those 35 years. the best part of the job (although you may not believe this) is the feeling of satisfaction when the result is good for the client and i feel i have helped them get through a disagreeable or trying situation.

still looking for that "perfect" position....

Until the end of last year, I had a pretty sweet set-up regarding employment -- I was working part-time evenings M-F at UPS as an International Auditor, a job which paid well (for part time) and carried excellent benefits. This allowed me to take temporary full-time jobs during the day for several months at a time. Whenever I got tired of the day job (or working 60 hours a week), I'd quit for 3-4 months and live off the savings I'd put away while working 2 jobs (I didn't have any time to spend it). It gave me an opportunity to try several varied jobs and pick up new skills, but not have to worry about benefits.

At the end of last year, however, I pulled up stakes and move to WV to be with Tom (svxfiles), whom I had been dating for two years -- driving down (after working 60 hours per week) every weekend, regardless of the weather. My mistake was waiting until I had run out of money to seriously start looking for another job, which means I pretty much had to take the first one that was offered. AND IT REALLY SVCKS! I am a "Customer Interaction Specialist" for a major cellular phone company, which means I spend all day answering the phone, dealing with everything from network problems to hardware problem to billing issues, trying to solve problems for people who can't even read the bill and in some cases don't even know how to turn their phone off and on!!!!! Needless to say, it is frustrating and stressful. As if that weren't enough, the pay is not that great, I got stuck with a really lousy schedule and the company is very stingy with their time (10 minute breaks and 1/2 hour lunch) yet they expect you to come in 15 minutes before your scheduled shift to boot up your computer and log on to 5 different applications (with 5 different passwords, 3 of which must be changed every month). The lousy shift, however, does allow me to continue to look for a better position without having to take time off from this one. Stay tuned for updates, it's got to get better.......

The things we do for love...........

I said it, and it wasn't 80k, it was more like 30k as a computer programer. Where I live a studio apartment rents for $800 a month if you can finde one, $1000-1200 for one bedroom, $1200-1600 for 2 bedrooms, $1500-2000+ for 3 bedrooms, so at best figure $600 for rent and another $100 for utilities, pay some taxes, and you've already spent $10000/year... I like to eat and have some play money...

My house payment is about $620 / month, for a 3 bedroom, 1750 sq ft brick, with a oversized 2 car garage (drew up my own house plans)...and that is a payment, not rent

Let's not start on rent...

Browsing recently, a studio apartment in a crappy part of Boston was listed for $1200! At least in Cali there's decent weather....And I work for a law firm in their records department, bored to tears and trying to break into the radio biz, to make less money...There must be something wrong with me...
