Question Transmission Slipping between shifts or...?

To describe what is happening: Driving on the freeway in "3" I push the gear selector into "D' around 2700rpm. When I do so the tach climbs up to nearly 4000rpm and them slowly moves down to about 2700 as the car accelarates. It used to just drop the rpms and the car would accelarate smoothly. It seems to still accelarate smoothly now but I hear the engine rev and observe the tach climing. It looks like it's slipping but I'm still moving!?! It seems like the transmission is only partially engaging and I hear the engine reving. This is very confusing. Any thoughts on diagnosis?

Also: I know that the condition of the tranny fluid is very good; I had the tranny flushed and refilled twice in a row. The fluid is brand new.

HELP! and thank you

Do a search on "brake band"...sounds like you've got the infamous 3-4 rpm surge which can be corrected by adjusting the brake band on the transmission (driver's side top of the transmission, just aft of the firewall).

This could be the bands that need to be tightened. Lets hope so. There have been members here that have had problems with the tranny after flushing it. I don't know why, it should be a good thing, but is seems like it somethimes causes problems. Good luck.

That's how my tranny started to die. Eventually 4th wouldn't hold a speed and 3rd started to slip on heavy acceleration.

Is it easy to get to the bands, easy to adjust them? How many bands are there? What about the shift into third, is that also a 'brake band?'

Please connect me to a thread that explains it. I would be grateful.

Just do a search on transmission brake band...
The adjustment screw is at the top of the transmission on the driver's side, just back from the firewall -- you can get easier access to it by removing the plastic engine cover over the throttle body.

I know this thread covers it --

I actually removed the entire throttle body to get to it, I think.

If you don't consider yourself 'mechanically inclined,' I might suggest having somebody else try this adjustment for you.

And I'd take it to somebody you trust - not somebody who is going to just tell you, 'get a new transmission.'

I mean, that may very well be what you need, but you want to at least try the brake band adjustment.

I found plenty of information on the search.

Good luck! Post back with your results -- I keep hoping someone will come up with new tools to do certain jobs - the brake band adjustment is one of them!
