Thumbs up Mobil 1 fixed my leak...

The dealer I bought my car from 6 weeks ago had regular oil and a crappy Fram filter on my SVX. It was leaking about two drops of oil a day on my beautiful driveway...

Changed to Mobil 1 10W-30 oil and a Purolatorr Pure One filter over the weekend, and not a drop of oil has fallen since Saturday night!

I'm only using Mobil 1 on this SVX!!!

how many miles did it have when you switched? I'd love to switch to mobil 1 but I'm apprehensive to go synth. I've heard many stories of increased leaking or engines burning oil when before they didn't after switching to mobil 1

My car had 96.5K mikles when I bought it, and now has just a tad under 98K. Mobil 1 10W-30 is actually recommended for high mileage cars and the new supersyn additive is supposed to improve its engine wear properties...

nice didnt know it met all those standards...Im glad i just changed out to all new mobil 1 in the engine and tranny then. I heard a while ago that there is no reason to be hesitant about switching to synthetic because if your seals were already that bad then odds are they were going to start leaking soon anyways. But i've also heard of people complaining of switching over with barely leaking cars and then having a sieve (Sp?) , and this is always blamed on the synthetic oil being thinner i believe? Always wondered what the deal was with that im just glad the engine isnt leaking after the switch

I highly doubt that M1 fixed your leaks. It is generally a slicker substance and usually causes more leaks. Possible a poorly installed filter or drain plug fixed your leak.

Mobil 1 leaked in my svx where havoline synthetic wouldn't - but this was a while ago - probably before they changed the formula and I don't think they had 10w 30 back then either.

Igg - be not afraid -I changed to synthetic at 100k (now at 213k) And I've only done the routine valve cover gaskets and front main seal - no drips once these are new. She still doesn't burn oil either.

It wasn't the drain plug or filter... When I first noticed the leak, those were the two things I immediately tightened. Leak persisted. After wiping away the oil on the bottom of the oil pan, it was pretty clear that the leak was coming from somewhere above.

I must admit, I was expecting the leak to persist after switching to synthetic, but for some weird reason my engine isn't leaking a drop now?!

I'm not complaining!

Agreed, I wouldn't either!!

To echo immortal, I switched to M1 at ~90k. No leaks here either.

LEAKS........

I've been told the leak caused by the synthetic oils is from the synthetic being much more detergent in its action, causing gunk around the old seals to be removed >> HENCE THE LEAK(S)

there is "seal conditioner" you can add before you switch to synthetic oil to prevent leaky seals, but i really don't know much about it - the cars i've put Mobil1 in all had less than 60k so i never bothered.

anyone have any info on seal conditioner?

I have resisted changing over, but after thinking long and hard about this, I am going to start to change over. Especially when the cars don't get all that many miles on them over the year. I have a couple that are driven the most, and that is fine, but the oil should be changed once a year (recommended) no matter how many miles are on it.

Any thoughts?

I have always been told, at least with normal oil, that it should be changed every three months regardless of mileage. Whether it is the same with synthetic, I don't know. Sythentic is good stuff though. Sometimes I feel that it is more piece of mind than anything though...

That might be the case now that I think of it. Synthetic might be more stable if the car is not being driven.

Mobil 1 is great stuff. Switched at 89K and no problems since then (144K now). No drips, no leaks, no burning. My car was well cared for though, with no pre-existing leaks, so YMMV. I love the fact that Mobil 1 can handle much higher temps without breaking down. I'm also very impressed by it's cold temp viscosity, since these New England winters can wreak havoc on engines and make regular oil as thick as molasses.

Try this at home: buy a qt. of Mobil 1 and a qt. of regular oil. Put them both in your freezer for a few hours. Take them out, open them up and pour a little amount of each one into a small container (so it isn't wasted). The difference in the way each oil flows is amazing. That's why Mobil 1 is in my cars!

Dave
