Help bolt pattern on diff is diffrent!!!
I am doing a 5spd swap in my SVX today i was hoping to finish so i was working on it. I was putting on my drive shaft and it went into the trannie with no problems, but then i tried to put the 2 inch extension on the drive shaft ( 5spd is about 2 inches shorter ) and bolt it up to the rear diff, i was trying to put the bolts through when i noticed that the drive shaft extension had a larger diameter than the diff bolt patern part, then i tried to put the bolt through it and sure enough the bolts would not fit, i could only get one in. So i spent about 1/2 and hour looking and tring to see if i could get it to fit, i figured the bolt holes werent evenly spaced out, unseccesull i went inside and measured my old diff from the auto, the circle were you bolt it to the drive shaft was about 3.25 inches, I then went out side and meared my new diff, it was only at most 3 inches. I got all of my stuff from a 90 legacy wagon with a 4.11 diff ratio, the stock rear end on a SVX is 3.545, both are r 160 diffs or should be. Whats wrong???

Try swapping out the ring and pinion of the Legacy onto the SVX diff. This way the bolt pattern is the same. I am diong a tranny swap too and I was told to do that anyway to keep the limited slip off the svx. I am using a 96 impreza doner though.

you cant swap the ring and pinion, because it will give me my old 3.545 rear end ratio.

I know you cant just swap the 4.11 gears into the 3.545 case with out changing the not sure what its called input shaft gear becasue that has the righ pitch for the 4.11 set. I already swaped the lsd out of the 3.545 into the 4.11.
Can I just take off the front cirle bolt thing theres a nut right in front of it but iam not sure if the cirle bolt pattern thing is part of the input shaft or justed pressed/pinned on it. Also the casing were the same ecept i had to grind down a part of it to be able to get the lsd unit with the gears in. Last edited by svxsubaru1; 03-06-2004 at 02:20 AM. |

you might want to PM Subafreak he just did this to my SVX (swap 4.11 gears into the stock rear diff) and i'm sure he'll be able to tell you exactly how to do it.

Just relax and take a deep breath. All you have to do is take off the big nut and change the rearend yoke (the round thing with the holes in it) Then touqe it to 123-145ft.

I went to the subaru dealer and he told me that i could do that but i would also need to take the gears out and tighne the bearings or something there would be 6 foot inches of resistance to spin the input shaft thing. He said when i loosen the bolt it will screw up the resistance. Is this true? He also said if it is not properly done the rear end bearings will die almost immetitly, and he used to work at a rear end shop.

Yeah what he just said. All your doing is swapping the ends, as long as you tourq it back to spec everything should be OK.
