i don't know squat about tranny internals - what needs done? can the gears and diff be replaced in the SVX 4EAT, does the whole tranny have to be replaced, cost?
somebody help me out. i don't do a lot of highway driving, so i'm not worried about that. this might be a nice mod to keep me from getting an STi for a while.

Only 3 days until i find out. This little project will be cool. I also am putting in a transmission cooler thermostat aswell. I will help to warm up the at fluid in those colder days in minneapolis.

And you can punch it off the line as hard as you want. I reckon the 5MT will blow before the auto, contary to popular opinion the auto is one strong box Harvey.

I'll agree with that. It's tricky to launch to 5speed and I ussually take it easy on my 5 speed when I take off anyway. I willing to bet Adams car will take mine off the line and depending on how well the shifting goes for both cars maybe even take me overall. I think a trip to the strip in in order.

Look at all the guys with the V8 muscle cars at the drag strip. They all use automatic transmissions. They're just fast, plain and simple. Also, autos are much easier on parts - axles, gears, and other things just don't endure the forces created by dumping a clutch.

I disagree...
Manuals are faster, if driven well, they have less drivetrain loss (so more HP gets to the ground)and are lighter. People that Bracket race prefer Auto trannys, not because they're faster, but because they are more consistant , and bracket racing you need to be very consistant to do well,...so no, manuals aren't the best thing for bracket racing, but this dosen't mean it's because they're slower. As for the reliability issue, I thing physically the manual is probably tougher than an automatic, BUT you can induce a LOT more stress on a manual tranny be shock loading the gearsets when dumping the clutch, which is something that the auto is insulated from, so if you're very abusive to your tranny, an auto will probably hold up longer....but if you treat them right, you'll never have to worry about a manual, other than replaceing the clutch now and then. My thoughts on the mater.

this turned into a really good thread..
harvey- good call on the whole torque converter bit.. i hadn't thought of that. i guess automatics are certianly much less complicated to "launch" it's kind of like point-and-click.. on a full road course racetrack or rally course, i kind of think a manual transmission would be in order, simly to better utilize engine braking and due to significantly reduced 'drivetrain loss" as huck pointed out. but i've never had a car on a racetrack, so i could be wrong. subafreak- yes, a trip to the strip (rhymes) is ABSOLUTELY in order i'd like to get a '92 w/stock transmission internals in the lane next to me and see how bad i would've whupped my own ass -adam |

Does anyone know what the top speed is now with the 4.11?
This swap sounds really tempting. My transmission if fine, so it's not like I'd need to replace everything. How much do you think it would cost just to get the new final gear (and any other parts it requires)? My SVX is FWD also, so that should make things simpler/cheaper. -Nathan |
