Loose ignition lock

Just recently noticed that my ignition lock is loose. I can grab it and slide it up about 3/16" and then the weight of it pulls it back down. Has anyone else had this problem?

In a similar coincidence, occasionally I can remove my ignition key from the lock while the gear selector is still in Drive. I know that the ignition lock and selector ara all a part of the shift interlock system. Could these two problems be related?

Just how easy is it to tighten this lock?

I've never taken on the SVX ignition switch, but, I'm guessing your security (knock-off) bolts have worked their way loose. If the SVX switch is similar to the many Ive worked with, it is attached to the column with a "collar" that is held together with two security bolts. The fact the bolts are loose is letting the collar slide and is misaligning the switch with the interlock mechanism (which is usually operated by a switch that requires for the collar to hold the switch snugly to the column). I was able to tighten one of mine (on my Capri) using small vice grips, but, like I say, I haven't looked into the SVX switch, but would think it's similar.

the worst part of the job is removing the plastic outer steering column covers. the rear one is particularly nasty. my shear bolts did work themselves loose, but now that ig-switch is rock solid.


oh yeah, have a good chiropractor handy.

One of my shear bolts have actually fallen out, the other was ready to fall and the lock was not locking the steering column at all.

This happened to us also. It's easy to fix.

If you don't want to buy new bolts, take the old bolts out and cut a slot in the top of them with a hacksaw. Put some glue on the threads and then tighten them with a screwdriver.

Crazy SVX ignition

On an apparently related topic, my parents were able to start and drive my car with the key for our 96 Legacy. When they got where they were going they couldn't figure out where the key FOB was, so they just locked the doors manually. Then, they tried to get in later, and, of course, the key didn't work in the doors. Thought y'all would like that story

I had that problem too!!!

I had exactly the same problem!

The ignition switch was VERY loose, and the steering column lock was not working!

Sure enough, one security bolt had fallen out completely, and was (thankfully) still there, rolling around in the lower steering column cover!

The other one was unthreaded about halfway.

Tighten both bolts, and - problem solved!!

It appears that many people have this problem - maybe the "knock off" torque on the original bolts was too low, and therefore not enough torque was applied to tighten the bolt itself!
