How in the earth could the transfer clutch disengage if not d.s.C is working ?

The way I see it, the d.s.C HAS to OPEN to disengage rwd...., and d.s.C's function is that if no power is applied to it, it is closed....!

Gid'ay Sonny, the C solenoid is held in the open position by a spring inside. The signal from the TCU causes it to close, increasing the pilot pressure on the transfer valve, to apply line pressure to the clutch.

So when the C solenoid is off the pilot pressure is leaked off and the clutch plates are released by spring pressure.

Harvey.

I see

My believe was that it worked the same way as the Legacy AT (closed when no power).

I think I have this problem also. Does any one have a pic of the duty solenoid C connector or a precise idea of where it's location so maybe I can test it manually?

Here, http://www.subaru-svx.net/photos/user.php?ZMan

Go to Zman's personal locker and click on the 4EAT manual. You'll find out more than you'd ever want to know.

I'm glad it's working well, but they charged you $817 to replace the solenoid???

Yes, $817 was the charge. I don't have the bill in front of me, but as I recall about $200 of that was for diagnostic work and the rest for the labor to replace and of course the cost of the solenoid. I had the work done at a private shop. The Subaru dealer estimate was $1000.

Well, this is just my opinion, but you got ripped off. It shouldn't take a dealer tech more than an hour, two tops, to get to the solenoid. I can see a private shop taking their time being careful working with unfamiliar components, but other than that, I can't see why it would cost that much. $200 in diagnostics, alone, is insane.

I probably did get ripped off. I feel like I get ripped off every time I take this car in for a repair. On the other hand I first took it to a dealer on the SVX Shop Search site that has a 4.5 rating and they gave me an estimate of $1000 plus. Guess a guy needs to learn to do these things himself.

Not necessarily. Internal tranny repairs are not for the faint of heart - trust me.

Dealers just over charge for SVX repairs. I've heard $800-$1000 to replace the transfer clutch and solenoid on the SVX. On my Legacy, I was quoted $350-$400 for the same repair.

Question Since we are on the topic of AWD troubleshooting..

Would the rear tires turn w/ the car running and in gear while on a lift?

My teal SVX would only turn the front wheels when I did this but Solenoid C may have been toast on that one too.

Yes, any time the TCU sees a difference in wheel speed between front or rear, the clutch is applied to stop it.

It can be different when the car is up on a hoist. This is a situtation that does not happen on the road, as the wheels are conected by the road. In the air the rear wheels could rotate faster than the fronts, that is not normal. I would do a spin test on wet grass, or that white stuff that you get over there, to be sure.

Harvey.
