It's definitely the harmonic balancer coming apart, I woudn't drive it like that, as if it comes off while it's running, it "Could" go through your radiator....

Dis-harmony

Thanks Huck....can this be replaced without yanking the radiator?

The car is sitting in my neighbor's driveway. I had to move it there to get away from my oak tree limbs during a recent ice storm warning. Naturally it picks that moment to throw balancers and belts...

Maybe, if you pull the fans out, and if you can get the crank bolt out

Unhappy

Sounds like Ron's tips on disassembling the front end were not too far off...

If you'd only taken me seriously in the first place. Also, that dead chipmunk wedged behind the alternator should be removed. Vermin ooze can foul the brushes, leading to voltage surges felt through the dipstick. VERY dangerous.

Ron (saving lives daily).

Lightbulb I don't know the concensus...

but I want to say 'thank you' to Ron. His posts always brighten my day - even when they are not as illuminating as recent advice.

So, I for one would seriously like to see another category added to the forum.

"Ron's Ruminations" is offered just to get it started.

ahhhhh....

That's a LEAF Ron....

....new glasses from Santa this year?

Well, considering that the car has a shot bearing in the back too,
maybe its time to tow it to the backyard and give Jean that planter she's always wanted.

Hey Leslie....need some spare parts? Don

Santa to head elf, holding list, and scratching head...

"What the heck is a harmonic balancer?"

"Gee Santa, didn't Prancer have one of those installed last year?"

$$

Jean was quoted $200 for the balancer and bolt by our local dealer. Is that about right?

It's about right if you can convince Jean that it's the perfect little stocking stuffer for the SVXaholic.

Ron (ruminating).

RUMinating

....and all this time, I thought you were a WINE man.

I'm afraid that the contents of my sock will not include car parts this year. An anniversary trip to Gatlinburg two days before Christmas has taken care of that.

Sounds like I will need to get in touch with someone who owns a rollback so that I can move the car from my neighbor's driveway.
In the shortrun I think I CAN afford a tarp....

Why can't you just get a tow truck to pull your neighbor's house out of the way? After all, the SVX will raise his property value.

Ron (abhoring stereotypes).

You can get the underdrive pully from Motorsports warehouse for $140.
http://store.yahoo.com/svx-motorspor...uncranpul.html

Cheaper than a new Subaru unit, plus gain a few HP

P.S. You shouldn't need a new bolt.....

You might also put a WTB post on the site and see if anyone has a stock unit they're willing to sell you - this is the route I went when the one on my SVX went bad (actually cracked about 1/3 of the way around!) - think I paid $25 for it.

Thanks guys!

I appreciate all feedback!

I still have a question....and excuse my being dense. I have looked at the exploded diagram on subaruparts.com and I don't see how this pulley has moved forward unless the bolt is coming loose. Is that possible? There are no cracks or breaks on the interior of the pulley that I can see...

The stock pulley is actually 2 parts the inner part that the bolt goes through, and the outer part the belt go on, they are put together with rubber and the rubber can deteriorate and cause the inner and outer parts to become loose from each other, allowing the outer section to come off.
