TC problem?
Hello, I am getting ready to trade away my auto tranny thats has just been rebuilt, it now has about 5,000 on it or so. Since the weather has gotten colder, my TC seems like it dosent want to let go when the transmission is at a colder temp. When I come to a stop sign it shudders, almost like a 5 speed when you use the brake to stop the car, and then dont press the clutch in, thats what it feels like anyway. But the tranny wont do this if I give it about a 3 mins warmup before backing out. I want to make sure the trans is in a very good condition when I trade it.
I have an appoinment to have it inspected before, and after it is taken out. But it isnt until next week. Any Ideas? Thanks --Miles |

Before I put my aux cooler in, I could almost set the clock by when lockup would occur. There was a certain point in the road (Just when I passed the Reed Post Office -- about 3 miles from my house) where I could "feel" TC Lockup. After I put the cooler in, and especially in very cold temps, I would be almost to work (a 40 mile drive) before lockup would occur. My guess is, that you're okay, although I'm vexed by the shudder.

I dont know where the shudder comes from either
I dont know where the shudder comes from either. The tranny shop drove it, and said that everything was fine, but they put in new fluid and lubricant just to be safe.
thanks for the info. --Miles |

No problem. Glad to help. I know that a shudder, at low speeds, but under load, and on sharp left turns, under load, could be transfer clutch related. But, straightline stopping with a shudder . . . I dunno. Anyone? Could it be brakeband related?

You comapre this shudder to when you drive a manual and leave it in gear when you stop, but I wonder how accurate this analogy is. Are you seeing a drop in engine speed similar to the manual transmission situation you describe?

Yea as Randy says it has to get to 52F before it will lock the converter. May be the oil is so cold that it is causing the two harves of the converter to drag together because of the viscosity of the cold oil.
I other words I don't have a clue New one on me. Harvey.

When this happens it is just like stopping normally except somtimes when the tranny is cold, it will shudder the analogy I used is the best way I could describe what it feels like, kind jerky, kinda makes the same noise as well, It even stalled once. It dos'nt do it very often since I give it a 3 min. warm up every morning.

Close...at 52°F it's not the TC locking, it's the tranny shifting into 4th gear. TC doesn't lock up until ~150°F.
Believe it or not but a bad coolant temp sensor can cause problems like this. When mine was bad I had troubles starting but more importantly when I shifted it would lurch and stall as if I dropped the clutch on a 5/6 speed. This would occur for the first few minutes when starting on a cold engine (eg. overnight).
