Fwd to awd conversion help

Have my 94L and a 92Ls and want to do a fwd to awd swap. I know most is just remove and replace but is there anything I should know? Tcu removal? How hard to remove shifter assembly? Anything that fwd is missing to make awd work right?

Planning to the swap and get my car running again soon and don't want many surprises

Thanks guys and gals

I had mine swapped from FWD to 5spd AWD. Have question you can ask. You will need a rear subframe. it bolts right up, the only different between AWD and FWD (hardware) is rear diff, rear subframe and drive shaft (axles too). You can get all of that from a donor SVX.

Obviously you need AWD transmission. Axles are the same for the front, need to get new ones (unless they are on the way out, might as well replace them at that point).

As far as the TCU, I am not sure, as I switched to 5spd. Maybe ask SVXfiles or 1986Nate
For the record, FWD was only 94 and 95.

Re: Fwd to awd conversion help

Just remove the FWD TCU and plug in the AWD TCU and you're done as far as that is concerned. Other than that, throw the trans in, driveshaft, rear diff and rear axles as well as the rear subframe and you're set. It's actually extremely straight forward.

Re: Fwd to awd conversion help

If I remember doesn't the FWD light have to be wired in? Also it won't matter but the rear springs have different rates for FWD to AWD but since you would be switching the entire rear end you will be good.

Re: Fwd to awd conversion help

hey guys thanks for replying. sorry for being so late on responding....work tends to do that

anyways, thanks again....just hope it's as easy as it sounds (bolts stripping or breaking ect) how hard is it to remove the transmission anyways? i heart it is a hassle cause of its shear weight and size?

and as for the FWD being only 94-95, i was aware of it which is why it was a FWD for so long..wanted to keep it more rare lol but money is an issue and FWD trans are not easy to find.

thanks again guys
