Would the PIT maneuver work on an SVX or other AWD car?
I have just been watching police chases on Utube and have begun to wonder if an SVX would just keep driving straight, if a cop was trying to nudge it off the road.
I imagine in a VTD SVX, the power would shift to the front wheels and the only problem would be panel damage to the rear quarters of the car. I know that there was an SVX involved in a high speed pursuit, but the cops never got near that guy!

Re: Would the PIT maneuver work on an SVX or other AWD car?
The pit manuver works on any drivetrain configuration if its going to work at all.
Honestly its mostly based on the driver being hit doing the wrong thing... hitting the brakes, over correcting, other other such problems that turn a little fender tap into a full spin. I'll have to find it sometime, but there is a chase with a 1st gen SHO that shows just how useless the PIT is against someone who knows how to beat it and the aggression (and big shiny brass ones). He simply gets on the throttle. The cop pushes the rear out to some rather extreme angles yet the guy never spins due to it. Same with a RWD or AWD car. Application of the throttle and smooth steering will keep a cop from spinning the car out. |

Re: Would the PIT maneuver work on an SVX or other AWD car?
Hitting the gas in RWD during a PITT would be a bad idea. You would lose speed, due to the rear end already losing traction. Then you'd be in some severe oversteer from being pushed. To counteract a PITT in RWD you'd have to steer away from the cop before hitting the gas.
Best not to run in the first place. That said, if you do, go faster than 120mph. Most modern cop cars run out of steam about there. The SUV's are governed to 110mph. Of course so are most average modern cars. Hi-Po specials excepted In AWD by all means, accelerate out of a PITT.
