Powder coated my STI wheels
I couldn't leave the stock silver alone, I had to have them in grey.
Now I have to work a weekend to pay for tires. Also, I would like opinions on the somewhat heavy powder coat on the steel inserts. Should I just leave it or have it removed? The close-up pic shows what I mean. Thanks

Re: Powder coated my STI wheels
.
One foreseeable problem comes when you tighten down the lug nuts. After I had my stock ones powdercoated I had to re-torque the wheels four times before everything was well. I torqued them to 80 ft. lbs after installation. I checked them about 50 miles later and they needed torquing again. Seems the finish around the lug nut seats compressed over time. The other problem comes from the fact that the wheel insert and the wheel itself are one finish. If tightening down the lug nuts cause the finish to compress, that is okay, but if it cracks and separates, the integrity of the finish may be compromised. .

Re: Powder coated my STI wheels
I agree, I'd leave it. They look fine and you may open a can of worms if you don't.

Re: Powder coated my STI wheels
Thanks guys, I appreciate all the input.
There was one thing I was thinking of trying though. I am going to go down to my local tool store and try to find a countersink to match the lugnuts. If I do, I was thinking that I may be able to safely remove the powder coating from the lug seats by hand. (NO DRILLS) If not, I'll just leave them alone.

Re: Powder coated my STI wheels
Yeah, I'd leave it too.
If you leave it the worst scenario is that you have to tighten the lug nuts mutiple times to achieve correct torque and it smashes the finish UNDER the nut (which you won't be able to see anyway.) If you try to remove it the worst scenario is that you remove more than you hoped, and have a chip or two that you can see all the time, and you STILL have to torque it multiple times. Lookin' good, by the way!
