REQUIRED coolant additive

Ok so subaru has this coolant additive out that they're wanting put in every model with every coolant change, except for those using the new blue coolant. Is anyone running it? It is supposed to be for the head gaskets.

Re: REQUIRED coolant additive

I believe it was only "required" for the engines with known HG "issues".

Re: REQUIRED coolant additive

It is nothing more then their version of Bars stop leak which isn't good for your cooling system long term. Don't let them add it, if they claim it will void your warranty simply explain to them that you change your fluids yourself and will be happy to put the bottle in when you change your coolant next month. Then take it home and throw it away.

It is a cost saving measure to ensure that more cars make it out of warranty coverage before their hg goes.

Re: REQUIRED coolant additive

The snake oil they said to add to the 2000-ish H4 engines? Meh.

Re: REQUIRED coolant additive

They only differance between the green and the blue coolant is that the blue is good for around 75,000 miles I think and the greens good for around 50,000miles. They both have corrosion and rust protection stuff in them. I just changed to the blue stuff last night it was $38 for 2 damn gallon jugs.

Re: REQUIRED coolant additive

IIRC, the additive is Bar's leak just re-badged as Subaru. It may even be on the bottle somewhere.

Re: REQUIRED coolant additive

It appears to be the bars stuff, it's gritty. Newer owners manuals say to put it in at each coolant change. I thought about changing over to the blue coolant but I don't know what all they've changed in it, and if it is compatible with the old gaskets and pumps. I'll still change it at 30,000 like reccomended regardless of what color it is

Re: REQUIRED coolant additive

hi the subaru additive is part of wwp -99 recall ,the service manuals were all up dated to read this is required in all cooling systems from 99 on including the new blue 100k coolant ,the green and aqua coolants are 30k coolants
i dont see any reason the put the expensive blue coolant

Re: REQUIRED coolant additive

Hi everyone, I have been using this in my 2000 Legacy GT limited. The result? New HGs at about 150,000 miles. But I still use it. One does what one must. By the way. The label says made in England. Take care, BOBB
