Rear bearing autopsy

After taking the rear bearing apart I got to see why it was making so much noise. Honestly the thing was roaring at 30 mph.

This is the outter race of the old bearing:


My guess is that water got into the bearing and rusted out the inside. A testament to how long to car sat on a lot/in someone's driveway. Some of the rollers are also completely roughed up. There's general small scratches and nicks all around the inside of the race.

Once my new one arrives it'll all go back together with new nuts and bolts, all of the rust polished off the knuckle and the knuckle painted. I'm worried that I'm going to be speeding though. The bearing was sort of my audio speedometer. Without the noise I might end up going a bit faster than I mean to.

Looks like fairly normal bearing wear. I bet the rough spot was on the bottom, where the loads are the highest.

Without the noise I might end up going a bit faster than I mean to.:That's easily done! This morning on my way home I nearly sped past my road. I was going 15mph faster that I thought!

That is not normal wear. That's what they always look like when i've seen them, which is a particular sort of bearing failure (which I can't recall the name of). What we need to do is figure out why these failures occur. If it is water then we have a seal problem like the legacys did back in the day.

I misspoke. It's a normal failure. The most stressed place on the bearing is pitted from transfer of material. The rollers/or ballbearings will show a similar amount of wear.
I work on industrial equpment, and change out failed bearings on a nearly daily basis. Just be glad that the inner races don't sieze to the rollers, the result being that it eats the hub. This is the most common failure at work, siezed bearings take out the shaft they're supporting.

I love it when you take out a bearing at work to replace it and the whole thing falls apart. It's so nice when it's not your svx
