Outback electrical gremlins

I have a friend with a 2002 Outback LL Bean (H-6 3.0).
It has run fine for 2½ years, has around 50,000 on it - "however"....

It has just started having bizarre electrical issues.

- Power windows work sporadically.
- Headlights won't come on, then may come on after turning ignition back on.
- Same thing with tail lights.
- lighted ring around ignition won't come on.

A month or so ago, they reported that the security system was acting strangely. Now the lights do not blink as they usually do when arming/disarming.

My only guess is water damage from long ago now just showing up. Doesn't really make sense though, that it would take that long to show up. My second guess is a bad security system module? would that be possible?

Any ideas on this anyone?

If the security system is an after market fitted, check for poor connections.

Hmm. I have a former Subaru tech friend with an 02 'bean who's motor threw a rod randomly on the highway at 80somethingk miles. Not under warranty....

Unhappy

Hi there, Jerry. If there's a good reason you suspect water damage, (car tried to attack a West Verginny crick), then I'd suspect corrosion in one, or all (3 in the SVX) of the multi-pin connectors that connect the front wiring harness with the rear harness. You may remember I drowned my baby up to mid-hub in the Atlantic Ocean last November, resulting in a soggy carpet. What may have taken your friend's car two years to accomplish in fresh water took mine about two days, using salt water. Gradually just about every cabin electrical accessory crapped out. I can't comment on an Outback, but the SVX connectors are located under the carpet & plastic cover along the passenger side door jamb. Get a schematic & see if there's a common thread between the failed accessories. There are also some ground wires along the chassis, under the passenger seat (SVX) that'd be worth looking at. If you see any tell-tale green fuzz around the connectors, they're probaby hosed - especially the female side.

Bottom line - I had a talented & patient friend cut out the connectors, re-splice, solder & shrink wrap every wire; & replace the connectors. Voila! Everything back to normal.

Happy hunting.

Ron.

Thanks Ron & all...
I will pass your thoughts along, unfortunately this vehicle is a few states away and I can't get my eyes or hands on it.

Thamks again for the input!
