Svx Ignorance

Why is it that the Subaru dealers I speak to know so little about their own product. I get some of the worst advise going from the local Subaru Service and Parts guys. They still will not agree that a tranny swap from a Legacy or Impressa is possible - Told it can't be done. will not fit etc.

Then you go to the salvage, wrecking yards etc, Now they should know what crosses over to what, what fits where etc etc. All I get from them is - It won't fit, won't work etc. I get the best advice from this site. Its a shame that the people in the business know so little.

Why is that??

A. They really probably don't know
B. They do know but they want you to spend more money and they want to take the easy way out because that will get you to spend more money

Pretty simple: SVX is a rare car, hence not many professional people know how to work on them (competently). Look at this link http://www.subaru-svx.net/shops and hopefully your problem will be solved.

They've never done it so it can't be done

We know better

...yeah money also.

Our local dealership will not touch used parts. They will always sell new parts because that's where they make their money. Every once in a while I will get a price quote from them just for a laugh. They make no effort to try to save you money.

The dealership is also only interested in current models. They're not going to train their employees on everything there is to know about the FF1, 360 or other extinct models.

Significant Technical Input
Geeeeez.... when was the last time you saw a FF1 or 360, not to mention a herd of them that would make it feasible to spend the money on training and support? I've worked on them, even owned an FF1, but it wasn't yesterday - more like 25-30 years ago.

Think about it, cars aren't designed and built with the intention that they should survive seven years or 150k and that includes the models sold with 10/100 warranties. What future would there be in that for the factories and dealers? Personally, I don't want to work on anything over ten years old. No, i don't make money on parts, just on labor and there's plenty of opportunity for that on older cars. But between the owners hedging cost vs worth and having 10+ years of oil leaks, dirt, salt and DIY 'repairs' on the car what would you do?

Of course they don't know what trans will fit, only somone that has tried and shared the info will know. Don't get all uppity, until Huck invested the effort nobody else knew for sure.

Not all dealers are that way.
Our dealer in Shigle Springs is awesome.

They are knowledgabel about SVXs. They will tell you that Subaru does not support or recommend doing a tranny swap on a SVX. They won't tell you it can't be done. They simply speak the Subaru party line.

In some cases, they will not put a different part in unless it is the proper part because they are liable and if it doesn't work out, guess who you would expect to fix it. We do some of these things when WE do the work ourself.
