Cant get the solder...
..to come off the wires inside the alternator to get the rectifier and diodes out. I have a 100watt gun and a pencil type on it at the same time and its still not even close to melting the solder. I checked the temp of both and the gun is around 400 and the other one is around 350 or so...ANy help is greatly appreciated all i have now is my bike and dont know when the next storm is gonna be
I also just tried to heat a screwdriver up with my propane torch and it still didnt even phase the solder on there. Last edited by want-a-fast-svx; 01-25-2006 at 09:32 AM. |

Where's Beav when you need him? He's the one to tell us of the inexpensive alternator fix.

Well i just dropped 45 bucks for a butane powered soldering iron that is supposedly 200-400 C which has to be hot enough you would think anyways. Well i for the life of me can not get the solder to even barely change consistency...Im thinking i might have to get the dremel out...

I don't know if you know that there is a Alternator How-To in the locker.
I don't remember for sure, but I think it shows how to melt the solder with a match.

unfortunately that was the first place i went and it came up as unavailable every time i tried. I did find beav's how to though on the mitsu. alt and its very informative. However there is no mention of not being able to unsolder the connections...I appreciate the try though.

I feel your pain, I went through a number of soldering guns with no luck. I ended up taking it to a local alternator rebuilder. They did it free of charge, I have to go back tomorrow to get the case bead blasted. I will ask how they got it done. See this thread for some possible options-

Just a quick question if i had only the abs light come on when the car started to run poorly and then shut off. Is this still sounding like the rectifier and diodes or something else? Just wanted to make sure before i order the parts and make that special resistance soldering iron...Thanks in advance, the only reason i ask is b/c all the others state that all the dash lights came on. and i only had one.

I wouldn't bother with making one when you can get this done for next to nothing. I just read also that a alternator can go bad only lighting up the abs light. Are you getting the parts from the links in this thread? http://www.subaru-svx.net/forum/show...battery+drains

I was plannin on ordering them from that thread yes, but i am lookiing at the parts online and trying to figure out if i screwed up other stuff trying to get the damn wires off. Where the wires are soldered on there is that part included in the new rectifier? Because i dont see the plate that those wires are attached to. And that plate melted in a couple of spots from trying to get the solder undone... let me guess i ruined the alternator by doing this huh? Here is the link im looking at right now and i dont see the spot the wires are attached to but it could be on the flip side. I just dont want to order it and still ahve a screwed alternator with new parts. ANy help is greatly appreciated. And i will probably go to an alternator shop tomorrow if i can find time inbetween getting x-rays done and trying to get a new social security card. I appreciate the help and info regarding the problems so far.

Can you post a pic of the damages? It may just be the cardboard splash gaurds that surround the solder joints. My guess is that they put those there just to keep solder from dripping in the electonics. After they remove the solder you will see what I mean. You can proably make new ones yourself. I think as long as you didn't stab a diode with your torch you should be ok.

ill try to get a pic up of it i dont think i hit the diodes but ya never know. Im sure when i get it to the shop they will be able to tell me if i fubard it up or not. Again i appreciate the help
