ABS kicking in?

situation: snow on the ground...or well..it's winter here... and sometimes when i brake. i get this crunching .//maybe metal on metal grinding sound. and the car slides a bit. before it stops.

i dont know if the ABS light is supposed to come on when the ABS kicks in. it doesn't for me. and the back light for the ABS light does work. i see it on when i put the car to "on".

my brother says that it is the ABS because i am using winter tires./ . or is it that i am having some brake malfunction?

anyone have the same thing?

The ABS makes weird crunching noises.

If it's accompanied by crunchy feedback in the brake pedal and stopping, it is working just fine. (:

Could you explain a little more clearly the issue with your dash lights?

The amber/orange ABS light should not turn on unless the ABS system has a problem at which point it will be completely electronically disabled.

ok...i just read my own message.
but all the dash lights are working properly. so all the lights come in when i turn the ignition to "on"...that's all..no burnt out bulbs.
is that better or just as bad?

If you turn the ignition to "on", all the lights should illuminate because power is being applied and none of the accessories are functioning, until ofcourse you turn over the engine, at which point all the lights should go away.

Doesn't sound like anything to worry about, the pedal should 'vibrate' quite violently, there will be an assosciated loud 'buzzing' type noise.....
as long as it only does this when the wheels are 'locking up-or on the 'verge' of locking up), you don't sound like you've got anything to worry about. I would check my pad thickness and fluid level anyway though
