Auxiliary tranny filter.
OK, so according to the TSB #16-56-93, all vehicles up to and including NH106285 need an auxiliary transmission filter installed on them. Which is ok considering that my # is NH108593. So then how come my transmission doesnt have that filter on it? I know it is important, considering subaru put out a recall on those other SVX's. I have read the bulletin on it, and it doesnt seem like a difficult thing to put on at all, and it is only about a $12 part, and $20 shipped. But does anyone know of a way that I can get Subaru to put this on for free? All of the other SVX's got theirs put on for free under recall, but then they didnt put a filter on mine, and didnt recall it. So to me, I would think they should install mine like they did for all of the others. Can anyone think of a way to handle this problem? I know $20 and 2 hours or so of work isnt a big deal, but If I could get it done for free, that would be even better. Thanks

Please remember that the price of this filter kit is severely discounted to begin with. You're already getting a deal.

an alternative is the Permacool external tranny filter. it uses regular oil filters and is easy to change. also has a receptacle on it for a tranny temp gauge sender if you want to add a gauge (highly recommended.)

Perma Cool filter
I removed the oem auxillary filter & installed the Perma Cool stuff. The filter is a regular 'spin on' and can be changed at will.
I change mine every 7000 miles. I have a pressure guage for my tranny, when I change the filter the pressure range drops by 20%.

That much? And is that every 7,000 miles?

I use a Fram X2 filter that is rated for 7000 miles. I think it is best to change it that often to keep the atf cleaner. The current fluid has 20,000+ miles and looks like new.

Transmission oil filters.
Allways use a filter that is designed for auto transmissions, only. Engine oil filters are too fine for transmssions, they can restrict the flow of oil through the cooler, that lubes the gears in the box. The engine filter is designed to filter a high pressure flow, around 65psi. The auto cooler flow is only about 10psi, and only uses a course filter, not more than, just a screen.
Harvey.

Tranny pressure
Quote:
I have a pressure guage in the line between the atf cooler and the out flow of the tranny. My pressure runs 25psi to 75 psi, never less than 25psi. My fluid is near new clean, I also have a temp guage and try my best to keep the temp down, not easy to do tn the desert in the summer, 115 degrees avg july & august.

filter issues

the atf (Royal Purple synthetic) looks like new. I have 102,000+ miles, I bought this SVX at 68,000 miles, Subaru USA tells me there is no record of a tranny rebuild or replace. I have a Hayden stack cooler, 30,000 gvw, I have by passed the radiator cooler. I keep a close eye on the atf temp.

Wow, so your trany could be original! That means the setup is really working for you!
I have Mobil 1 with B&M cooler bypass the radiator with the permacool setup( second filter ) for about 200 miles. I have to take the B&M cooler and permacool setup of from other SVX which got trany problem. And hopefully my trany will also last long. Thanks |

Am I wrong or would a pressure gauge be better fitted to the return line to the tranny (after the cooler/filter)?
Reason being the high pressure where you have it now could either mean the tranny is strong or the filter/cooler is nearly plugged. I suppose a flow meter of some sort would be best.
