tranny needed!

i read that the svx trannies were a weak point...

well driving home the other night i noticed my tach moving clockwise and my speedo moving counterclock!?

no good at all - pull over, rev a bit - lots of cool rpms from the motor, no forward go from the rest of the girl...

nothing in any detent - but hey! park still holds her stead

anyway - aamco wants something to the tune of $2.5k for a rebuild

which i dont really have right now

so anyone have a reliable tranny for sale?

i live in the kansas city area

thanks in advance guys....

-sau

Welcome to the site! You may want to search for a thread involving swapping a transmission from another Subaru. This will give you better gearing (4.11 or 4.44 vs 3.54) and make your SVX even more enjoyable to drive.

thank you kind sir

yes my options are open

in the end i want my car back on the road - just dont want to spend north of $2k getting it there...

and i thought the tranny in the awd and the fwd where the same minus whatever popped on the rear of the tranny which leads back to the diff...

i take it im wrong in these assumptions...

I think there are lines missing in the 2wd tranny to control the AWD. You'll save money going to an alternate tranny than the SVX 4EAT.

Tom Has Yer Tranny...

go to the "for sale" thread and you'll find Tom's ad for his used tranny. It's currently for sale on ebay. Tom thinks it MAY have been rebuilt but doesn't know for sure. Shipping may be a problem...read Tom's comments.

My 4.44 swap cost about $1500 with parts and labor at a professional shop.

1997 Outback trans w/25k: $525.
2001 Outback rear gears: $150 swapped into my diff case / carrier.
The rest was labor, fluids, seals, incidentals etc.

If you want your car to be much quicker and more responsive, at the expense of gas mileage and some engine noise on the highway, go with the 4.44's. If you want the best of both worlds, quicker than stock acceleration and responsiveness with decent cruising and fuel economy, find a 4.11 transmission and rear gears.

Or you could buy my car. (see my for sale post)

I think shipping is going to be an issue wherever you find a trans, short of one in your general area (duh! ). In addition to Tom J's trans, I think Tom K (SVXFiles) also has a trans or two at his shop.

4WD, 2.2L,
trans code #TZ102ZABAA
106,000 MILES

anyone know if thats 4.44 or 4.11

also im having a shop do the actually tranny install - but a buddy of mine and i are going to handle the rear diff issue [gonna change the rear bearings while we are at it!]

can i have the shop leave the drive shaft out and drive home using just fwd?
