Alternator gone..
Anyone any idea whether these are available reconditioned, he says, expecting a bout of sniggering from all who read this?!
Mine is only putting just over 12 volts into the battery - the previous battery died. I had new drive belts fitted recently, but checked the tension and these are fine. Beav suggested rectifier and diode, but don't have a clue where to get these from - I did this many years ago on a Triumph TR. Any alternative alternator fit? Anyone got a spare one whilst I sort mine out? So many questions... |

Hi Tony,
I let check mine year ago at specialist and he told me it is "japaneese standard alternator" (think Mitsubishi) so it means no problem with rebuilding. He offered me price at 100 EUR if someting go wrong. Mine is still in a good shape. So try to check any local shop specializing in alternator rebuilds, it as, as for me, the cheapest way. As it is not rare alternator it sould be cheap in the UK as well. Petr |

Rebuild
Peter is right Tony.
Mine was lighting all the dash lights when I got it first. The local auto electrician shop in Naas rebuilt it for me. Think it cost me about £100 at the time, that would be Punts, not Euro. This is the best bet. I could loan you the spare one from Black Betty, but you would be better off putting the postage into a rebuild. As Peter says, the alternator is standard issue Japanese kit. When rebuilding, they can replace bearings which is a good thing. You could also do a search on the US Technical section. Some people [Aredubjay comes to mind] have had theirs rebuilt with more windings to pump out more amps. Good idea in principle, but I have had absolutely NO problem with my stock standard rebuild over four years. For £100, good value fix I think. {Pumped up alternator would be useful if you were driving big stereo amplifiers all the time though} Joe

Sorry to hear of your woes. See my previous essay on the subject of alternators. http://www.subaru-svx.net/forum/show...threadid=11813 In short: Recondition: £112 New (alternator shop): £145 New (subaru dealer): £570 One thing to bear in mind, if you decide to go Beav's rectifier and diode route: It's not easy to dismantle the alternator. The service manual suggests using a soldering iron to heat up the bearings until they expand enough that you can pull the two halves apart. After spending a long time trying, I came to the conclusion that my soldering iron was nowhere near hot enough. I decided not to risk trying a blow torch instead. YMMV Phil. I bid against Rallyman for that very car a few months ago. He was going to strip it down and rally it!
Re the alternator, I am having it rebuilt - got home from abroad last night, took it off and delivered this am. £75+vat, returned today if the parts in stock! He has checked it and definitely faulty. Thanks for all you helkp and advice people, especially you Joe for volunteering to lend me one of the many you now posess! Thanks again..... |

Allternator disaster!
Reconditioner says that he can't cross reference any of the parts required - Regulator and rectifier. And he can't find an alternative full unit
Phil, do have a number for the guy that you used? |

This is like a Viking saga! In Germany on business Thurs & Frid. Rang this company. Only the Regulator in stock. Ordered it Thurs am. Reconditioner checked the rectifier on my alternator. All ok Ball from the parts supplier saying they can't deal with a private individual. Reconditioner isn't interested in ordering. Got a name of Quinton Hazell in UK. They have a regulator equivalent part in stock. Placed an order Thurs pm for delivery to reconditioner. They rang back, saying they can't take visa, buthave contacted the reconditioner, who will collect the part Fri am. Rang reconditioner Frid pm after my meetings. They were waiting for the part to turn up! Rang the parts supplier - they were waiting for the parts to be collected! Asked them to deliver by guaranteed post Sat am to reconditioner (they only work Sat am). No guaranteed post on Sat.....so I sit here, waiting for a call from the reconditioner that the parts have arrived - knowing that they won't. Or lost in the Christmas mail. Or destroyed as a suspect package..... This may be the last straw for the SVX. I will leave the decision until after Christmas, but my new year resolution may be to get a sensible car...... I'll get the alternative part number and post, along with the Quinton Hazell phone number (they have been extremely helpful in all this) when I get it. Thanks for all the help guys... |

I would have gladly sent you the alternator, but I thought the price of postage would be close to the price of a recon job. Don't make a decision on the car while you are angry. Joe
