tranny cliking

i think the nasty clikking nouse that i thought was a bad cat i think it is the tranny now. i had the two front cat removed and replaced.

now when i start it up it make like two thunks and the it starts up and all you here is a never ending clikking nouse that just get louder as you rev it up. when i looked under the hood it sound like it is coming from the tranny.

I second the motion. The "flywheel", actually more properly called flexplate or driveplate, is the likely source of the problem.

If the crack is on an outer edge, you might be able to see if that's the problem by putting an appropriate sized socket on a breaker bar and rotating the engine using the bolt holding on the harmonic balancer at the front of the engine...look into the hole on the top, rear, passenger side of the engine. If it's near the center (where the engine drives the plate) I don't know a way to see in there, but then again, I've never tried.

If this is the problem, the only fix is to pull either the engine or the tranny, neither is fun (well it might be, depends on your definition of fun).

Sounds like a cracked flexplate or driveplate as subaru calls it I believe. If you have any mechanic experience or pulling trannys this isn't really that hard of a job and will save you a good amount of money I'm willing to bet. I don't know what book is but you definitely don't want to pay for it I'm sure of that. I have a flexplate from a engine with only ~70xxx miles on it. You name a price and you can have it if you want. I don't know what it would cost new but just thought I'd let you know. I have the broken auto with all the parts just sitting in my garage.

The flexplate runs around $28 plus shipping on SubaruParts:

It's actually a cheap item, but a pain to replace.

P.S. I also think it's the flexplate.

well i just had Cottmans tran. rebuilt my tranny at 96,000 mile and im only at 99000 mile. does that sound right.
when i had the tranny fixed the first time is was for the same problem.

? is this a comman problem for the svx.
well i will take it back to cottmans on monday and see what they say.

when i had them do it the first time they said that sound was my engine but when they were done the sound was gone. but both of my front cat started making sound. and both of those were fine when i brought it in.

so if anyone need a tranny rebuild dont go to cottmans trans. i have had nothing but problems with them and they like to break thing like my cat that you have to take off to remove the tranny.
