Ball Joint Problem....

Im Reposting this from Mod Mania

Has ANYONE here had a Front Ball Joint POP while they were driving????

This happened to me yesterday... and im SOO afrade that
I caused even more damage just getting it towed ;(

SUPRIZINGLY the Ball Joint was only $75 From SUBARU!
(subaru part? cheap? never hurd those go together)

Anyway... has anyone else had this problem before?

The ONLY thing I could think of is the owner before me
REALY did some damage to the passanger front wheel
which caused a weak point.

You can see from the pics it just basicly came appart.
My Mechanic said from what it looks like... Looks as if it was
just very very old. I meen it is a 92... So he is also going to check
the other side "JUST INCASE"

Here are the pics

As you can see, where the Passanger Front wheel is ;(
ALOT of stress was on that wheel when it was beening pulled onto, and taken off the Flatbed ;(

From the Front of the car, showing the damage, of how the Ball Joint (1) POPED from its Caseing on the A-Frame (2)

And the same from Behind the wheel.

HOPEFULLY this wont happen to anyone else... I recomend
taking it to your Tech and having them check them out... My Tech
said he could tell if the other one (driver side) was just in bad of shape... So mabey this is something you want to check out... Before it happens! and TRUST me... im afrade of what else mite
have happened underneath just from towing... THEY MADE ME
sign a Release form, saying that any damage resulting from the tow wasnt there fault... So yea... its pretty serious.

Mabey my experence will help stop some headaches of the other
SVX Owners!

Was it towed on a flatbed trailer? It should have been if it wasn't. That looks pretty nasty, I have never heard of it happening before, to that extent. Looks like you may need a new wheel. Why is the caliper so wet? Is brake fluid leaking?

A ball joint in that bad of shape makes itself known way ahead of time. Most notably you'll hear a knocking noise and feel a vibration in turns. They don't just pop without warning.

I'm going to go out on a limb and say that you should really take better care of your car.

As for what other damage might have been done, I'd say start with an alignment. You're going to need one after replacing a ball joint anyway. It's possible that the strut mount was damaged. Other than that I think you're probably okay. I think you're lucky - had this happened at high speed you would have been in trouble

Your front wheels are on backwards, by the way. I had to say it before somebody else did.

Yes it was a flatbed... However there was no way to keep the wheel on correctly...

And yes... LOL, My Rack-N-Pinon has been leaking on that side
ever sence i got it.. It goes though one quart every
3 weeks (everyday driving) So its not that bad... But I dont have
the $700 (parts and labor) to get it replaced!!!

I BELIVE the wheel is fine... Mabey a new Tire however.

as I said above... I hope this gets other SVX owners to go out
and atleast get them checked before they run into this.

Now... it is only a $140 Fix ($75 for part, $65 (1 hour) labor)
However... it mite have caused more damaged just getting it towed.

we put that wheel on a GoJack (Lifts that wheel up)
but it still put ALOT of strain on everything under there.

This Poor thing I swear, when I got it, it had the leak, My
Spedo didnt work (and still doesnt, cause im afrade to get it
checked to find out the price

Had to replace the Radator ($400 )

The Fenders on the front, the hood all have white spots
(cause the guy who had it, tried using a wax on chiped paint)
and the Driver Side door has a bad dent in it, The Passanger
Side Turn Light, and Headlight doesnt sit correctly
(hence why I think the Prev. owner had some type of minor
crash that made the Ball Joint Week in the first place)

It needs alot of work... However I've wanted a SVX ever sence
I saw my first one, at the ABQ Street races, when I was in a
1990 Legacy Turbo Sport.. and the SVX blew me away!!!!!

So this is my Project car... I plan on having it fully restored.

Actualy I did notice a VERY VERY SLIGHT nocking.. I thought it was
because I need new front struts. it was NEVER realy loud..
if you had the windows up... you wouldnt notice it unless you
were listening for it. And that does make alot of sence now too ;(

Anyway... HOPEFULLY everything else will be ok. At this point that
I actualy have an SVX... I dont care what it takes to get it looking
brand new again.. Im willing to do it.

In that case I apologize. The previous owner should have taken better care of your car.

I think you're in for a long, expensive journey, though. Buying an SVX that's been abused (as yours apparently has) is far more expensive and frustrating than buying one that was taken care of.

Very true... I meen I did get this for only $1500!!!!!
So that tells you right there it will take some work!

But Im willing to stick it out. I've been a subaru lover
for years, and the SVX has to be the funnest to drive!

I just love how everyone keeps commin up to me and asking
"what type of car is that???" "its A Subaru SVX" "Subaru???
Dont they make those waggons????"

LOL I love it... 95% of Florida has no clue of the true power of
a subaru. Alwell.. there Loss!

My mom lives near Ocala and has a '92 black over claret SVX. She doesn't drive it much, though - it only has about 50k miles on it. You're right - they're very rare down there. She doesn't see another very often.
