Are you set on a sport bike? Why not one of the early crossovers like the Nighthawk, Radian or Seca? They are all fairly good perfomance wise. I have no problems keeping up with any of the Harley's I've ridden with with my Nighthawk 650 and am quite sure the bike is a good bit quicker then my freinds new Bonnie. These mid 80 bikes are fairly light, well handling and very reliable. Granted with any 20 year old vehicle age becomes an issue but I'll ride my Honda 200-300 miles a day without any pain. Granted in 2 or 3 years I'll be bored with a Honda but it definately is a great beginner's bike.

If I was starting out, leaning toward sport bike, and wanted and/or could afford a new bike I think I'd get this one:

<<< my bike for more years than I have fingers & toes (and I still have the more or less normal complement after 36 years of riding - typed with my fingers crossed).

I agree that the 650 Savage would make an excelent first bike. One that would not be outgrown quickly and would keep a new rider satisfied as well as an experienced rider who didn't need a liter+ monster under his butt. I was not aware that they had been making that model for over 20 years, unless you only have maybe 1 finger on each hand and foot. How long have they been making the Savage? I thought they came out with it in 2000?
