Safe to drive?
I just did my ps return hose and the car's smoking and making an electric motor-like whine that gets prgressively worse the longer I drive the car. I haven't noticed any significant ps fluid loss.
I'm taking it to a mechanic, but they can't see it till monday. Would it be safe to make two 15 minutes journeys today and tomorrow?

Well...it's whining because fluid is still spewing from the top of the resevoir. How do I make it stop?

Actually, I might be in the clear. The ps resevoir spewed a bit on the way to work tonight, but not on the way back. I think once the air gets out, it should be OK.
Also, the smoking has reduced to virtually nothing. It still smokes a bit, but it's getting to the point where I can't see it with the hood down. Thank god!!!

How did you fix it? Glad to hear it is getting better with driving. Usually any time there is noise, it is not a good thing. And, things like that don't usually heal.

I guess ATF takes a while to burn off. I can't say it's healed, but I'll see what another day of driving does. The ps fluid was leaking onto the pully for the pump, which might explain the noise. If and when it stops leaking from the cap, I'll wash off the belt and pulleys.

Do you have any ideas of how you could fill the system without getting the spewing of the fluid? Maybe add it slower so it wouldn't have as much to surge. Just a thought.

I added it pretty slowly. Honestly, I'm surprised it did what it did.

DEpending on how low the system is you should add some fluid and with the front wheels off the ground and the ignition disabled, crank the engine over wile turning the steering wheel back and forth. This will allow the fluid to fill up the pump and the rack with out dry running the pump. Just do this at first to purge the air out and fill the resivore, then you can start the car and turn the wheel a few more times to finnish getting the air out. Make sure not to over fill it, the stick has a cold and hot mark for a reason. The problem you probly had was that you filled it to the top and then just started it up and drove it, with the resivore full the air bubbles have no place to go and push out the top of the resivore. I made this mistake on an XT many years ago.

Thanks for the advice. How would one go about disabling the ignition?

Or disable the fuel pump, pull the fuel pump relay.
