Rhetorical question
It seems like I see more SVXs being parted out than being sold as running cars.
I wonder what % of SVXs sold are still on the road? I am guessing less than 50%, which is not a lot for a $30,000 vehicle that is 13 yo at most. |

The other thing to consider is that there were only 14,257 of all model years imported into the US. Unfortunately, many owners are parting the cars out instead of fixing them up. The is probably because they become less expensive at this time and many owners don't know what they are buying. By that I mean that it takes some maintenance to keep them going and are not like many other cars that have cheap parts and less expensive maintenance. So, they just part them out when they seem like they are going to cost them a lot of money to keep them going. Some of us though are in it for the long haul.

SVXs on the road
Quote:
"Hi Jack, I was able to find out most of the information you requested, however only for Canada. The number of SVX cars produced for and sold in Canada are as follows: (MY stands for model year) 1992 MY – 667 units 1994 MY – 203 units 1996 MY – 30 units For a total of 900 units nation-wide. We have a company that provides market area reports and through them I was able to get an estimate on how many Subaru SVX cars are still on the road in Canada. They use several advanced formulas to estimate this number, so it is believed to be as accurate as possible without physically counting each car. The number is estimated at 761 (current as of December 31, 2004) I hope this helps and apologize I was unable to provide Global or USA figures. Below is a link for Subaru of America - I would suggest filling out a contact form with your request for SVX data and hopefully they will be able to provide you with the USA info. Below are links for Subaru Global and Fuji Heavy Industries (the company which owns Subaru) – maybe they can help you out with Global information. http://www.subaru.com/tools/contactus/index.jsp http://www.subaru-global.com/ http://www.fhi.co.jp/english/ Thanks again for your interest in Subaru!" Maybe you could follow up with an email to Subaru of America. I'm stilll interested too. Last edited by bcpianoman; 12-18-2005 at 02:08 PM. |

To most it's a simple economic equation: When the cost of a needed repair exceeds the value of the car, break the car.
But how does one determine the "value?" You have to figure-in what you know about the car, how long you plan to keep it, and what else it's likely to need within that time frame. For example, if my car's transmission goes, the conventional wisdom would be that it's not worth repairing. But I've put 30,000 miles on the car, I know what's been done to it and what it's likely to need, and I anticipate keeping it for several more years. It's a known commodity that's worth more to me than to the used car market. dcb |

I'm in the process right now of trying to figure that out or get as close as i can. if you click the topic at the top that's titled "slight obsessive and obsessivly curious" you can add your car's (if you have one ) info to the list. So far i've located 200 of 14,000 in about a month (with 2 weeks of finals no less!) but alot of members have yet to send me thier info all i have is those that have sold recently or were placed on a different list (also sold cars) more than a year ago.

I look at it this way. The sticker price of a NEW '92 was about what they are asking for a TRIBECA now. I bought mine with 50,000 miles on the ticker for 12,500. I figure I will keep mine on the road until my total amount spent reaches the initial sticker price. I still have about 18,000 left to spend to reach that total.

You all make very good points:
Fix it $$$$>Market value=Parts car. However, I don't think many people, outside of this forum, understand the intrinsic value of the vehicle. This is not a throw away Honda Civic which can be gotten anyday of the week. We are talking about one of the rarest/most unique production cars ever made. I think it sad that when a tranny blows on an otherwise decent SVX, its owner doesn't equate the $2000 repair bill to pride of ownership. I am fortunate that my SVX is not daily driver, I put less than about 3000 per year on her. I also understand that if the SVX is from East coast rust starts to come into play. Obviously I am preaching to the choir here Amen~ Reverend Robert |
