Re: Where is vin 001?
not entirely sure the prototype in silver is the same car as the red one... Although the mirrors are relatively easy to change why go to a folding mirror before going to a solid?? Maybe the red one was a pre-prototype model which was repainted... Just the cronological order of things seems off to go from a folding mirror to a single piece unit on the same car??
I see the silver paint under the hood which would lead us to believe they were one in the same but the mirrors are bothering me Tom |

Re: Where is vin 001?
All good questions. While they are all certainly relevant and obviously worth talking about, what I meant was, where are all the VERY FIRST svxs to roll off the line, like, were the first 40 distributed to the press and then brought back and destroyed? I actually don't know what happens to these vehicles. I mean basically they get sent to the mags and stuff and they basically beat the poop out of them and then pass them on to the next magazine. I am sure that subaru takes the vehicle and cleans it up inbetween, but what do you do with a 1992 svx that has 5000 miles on it after road and track, automobile, car and driver and all them have clocked performance numbers on it, and etc. Or do these mags actually buy these cars and then turn around and sell them? I don't know how that works.
If I were guessing, I would think that you would start the production line, train the people and everything with say 5 units, check them over, and then start building the actual cars to sell, using those 5 "bastard" ones as the ones to put in lobbies of subaru or send to tech training centers. I know GM does this. They build them and then all the big wigs play with it before the real run starts. These are all things that are knowable. Understandably, Subaru wants to keep things "quiet" as all companies are this way, but I think asking specific questions would be a good idea, and I think the people that know would not mind at all telling us since the car has been out of production for so long now. The main thing we need to do is decide, as a "family" what we want to do/ask etc for the 20th meet. And we need to start planning now. I don't want the "moderators" to decide on our behalf what questions we have or anything like that. We need to do something big for the 20th, the cars are already way beyond their end of service life date and our numbers are shrinking drastically. Just some thoughts...

Re: Where is vin 001?
I would imagine the first few off the line went to Japan.... If you are asking which were the first in NA... then just run a car fax on the VIN's... But make sure you vary the trims as there is a chance the first few might not have been LS-L's

We haven't even decided on a location, much less a hotel. If you wait for a committee to decide, it will never happen! For an odd idea, click HERE A major hurdle to overcome is distance. At 25,000 miles a year, these cars have driven a quarter million miles since the 10th Anniversary Meet. Many will be apprehensive about driving a long distance, knowing that mechanical problems may occur enroute and possibly waylay them long enough to miss the meet. It may be a drive-in meet for those close enough and a fly-in meet for the rest. There will be enoughcars present to comemmorate the event. Just ask earl if he thinks he could have had more fun at Reading if his car was there. It's all about the people. Just like a family reunion where family comes in from all over... not necessarily by car. .

John's statement was probably phrased too quickly, but the essential message that many owners will have quarter million mile cars at that time is correct. 20 years at 12,500 miles will come in at a quarter million for any cars being well used. An SVX in use as a daily driver covering 25k a year will have covered a quarter million covered since the 10th Anniversary as well, though in fairness there can't be too many getting that sort of use. Here in Ireland and England we don't cover such high miles in our SVXes as you guys do. It just may have something to do with our fuel prices being four times more expensive than yours, who knows? Most owner cars over here will range from 90K to 150K, my own cars range from 40k to about 130k. Your point about a daily use car being easier to trust for a thousand miles x2 run is well made though. It's only people like me who have them mostly in storage that are wary of the Meet Monster. Cars that are rarely used in anger are more likely to develop faults you did not know were there on a long run, hence the Meet Monster . How about advising people intending to do the long run to attend a "local" meet first, giving their cars a 500-600 miles workout to suss out any problems in advance? Joe

I actually am hoping to do your above mentioned method for "getting the SVX legs going" I am unsure of making it to Reading, but am hoping to make it there in the Laguna FWD "project" car if possible. I will be using it as my daily driver if I can get the darn thing fixed but thats a whole nother issue with its own thread. Basically I was going to be making a few good highway runs with it slowly stretching it out, making sure that everything is sound with it before making the 900 mile trip to Reading. Btw, as you see in my signature, my 3 SVX are only right around the 100,000 mile mark To keep this on topic, I plan on going to the 20th anniversary meet wherever it may be... and if the prototype is there, awesome. If not, thats cool too. Its a great time just to meet fellow SVXers and have a good time at any meet Last edited by 1986nate; 03-22-2010 at 04:01 AM. |

Re: Where is vin 001?
.
I need to clear up this misunderstanding, which is entirely my fault. here is the thrust of what I wanted to convey: In essence, as long as maintenance is done on a regular basis, most of these cars should be reliable for a long time. At the 10th Anniversary, The oldest cars were about 10 years old and the youngest about four, Regular oil changes, tune ups, and the other major stuff, like timing belts, were being done and the mileages were fairly low. Fast forward 10 years and now the age has doubled. These cars will need more maintenance in their later years, no matter how well maintained they are, and problems will arise, because of mileage, that were not seen 10 years ago. MY 96 Polo has had oil changes every 3500 miles since new, using Mobil1, transmission flushes every 25,000 miles etc. and any maintenence it needed, Even with all of my efforts, my head gasket failed at 125,000 miles and my main crankshaft bearings wer just about worn away, Nothing that I did; the oil tolerences were set too tight at the factory. I couldn't have perceived this and done any more than I did, and yet... Head gaskets fail due to age, not mileage, But this is random (my son's 92 pearlie has a perfect running engine with 234,000 miles and 20 years on it and no HG problems) How many HG posts did you find here in the early days, compared to now? The very first head dasket post was in September 2006, and there have been 500 posts since then. These cars are beginning to wear out from the top and the bottom. Maybe I just should have said that these cars are twice as old as they were wheb Lafayette happened and that they are more fragile in many respects. Sorry about not thinking this through accurately .

Re: Where is vin 001?
I am glad I retired and the mileage on the SVX has slowed down considerably.
Had I kept my present job and commuted from where I now live (56 miles one way), I would be putting on an easy 35,000 a year. As it is I put less than 8,000 miles on the car yearly. But in reality, I would have bought a smaller, more fuel efficient car as my "commuter beater" and saved the SVX. .

Re: Where is vin 001?
Hey Fellas
Those are good points. Many are going to want to attend the Twentieth, people that normally don't go to meetings included. Sticking with the thread topic I think it is fair to say that the prototype red car will not be shipped from Japan for the meeting. Forget that option right now, it's no longer on the table. Regards the numbers from 001 to 0041 [or whatever our lowest known is at present] it's very likely that some of the earliest cars off the line would have been tested possibly to destruction and stripped for analysis. Some would have been crash tested. Some may have been retained by Fuji for historic reasons. That would probably mop up the first ten numbers. Maybe more. After that some of the next numbers would have been used and abused by the muttering rotters of the press. These cars also may have been brought back and analysed by engineers. In addition it is common practice for major dealers to be given [or to use] cars as demonstrators so that the cars get seen on the roads. Regards travelling 1000 miles or more to a meeting there is something we could do to help people ensure their cars are reliable enough for the trip. We could compile a list of the things that tend to go wrong on the SVX either through age or through wear and tear or through breakage. If we can make that list mirror accurately things that actually have happened to SVXes on long runs, then anybody about to undertake the long mileage trip could attend to the List Items and possibly bring an SVX Breakdown Survival Kit on the journey that could give some peace of mind. How about we check the archives, poll the members, compile The List and back up with a set of suggestions and fixes? Joe

Re: Where is vin 001?
The dealer demos are not retained property of the manufacturer. They are just dealership property, and they are just retired after 5k or a year and sold as a demo.
As for the head gaskets, I have asked many subaru and SVX people with headgasket failures how often they changed their coolant, most were surprised to learn that Subaru original coolant is special, and that what you should be using, mixed with distilled or even distilled and deionized water if you have access. COOLANT CHANGE INTERVAL IS 3YR/30000 MILES. This means change it all. Power flush the block and radiator every 3 years, not drain and fill every 3 years. I personally use factory coolant and deion/distilled water power flush every 3 years, because I don't drive it 30k in that time. at 150,000 I will be changing to the toyota super long life but will still maintain the 30k intervals. I would be interested to know who followed this shedule and who didn't as it corresponds to HG failures.

Re: Where is vin 001?
This oil clearance being too tight at the factory is really a tough pill for me to swallow. My car has a main gone, too, and I always assumed it was because the first owner had done something or it had been run with no oil pressure at some time. But that is like a major, major manufacturing defect.
We need to start a new thread on this. I want to know what weight of oil was used, sorta like the head gasket issue and me wanting to know who is keeping up with their coolant maintenance.
