Clicking Sound (both front wheels)
Car has been making this noise for a while i think but it seems to be getting louder...its also getting warmer out so i have my windows down which may explain it getting louder...but anyway it would seem to me its the cv joints. One wheel seems to click a little louder than the other, but the tighter the turn the louder the clicking. I asked my mechanic a while ago and he told me it was the steering rack which makes no sense to me but i'm no subaru mechanic. Any thoughts?...i'm thinkin i need new cv joints.
if thats what you guys think, how much do cv joints usually run/axle? thanks -Alex |

Yes that sounds like CV joints. Try turning in a tight circle and giving it some gas. This usually makes it more apparant.

if indeed it is a CV problem, the axle will need to be replaced. this is a DIY job if you're pretty good with your hands and have a set of metric sockets and box wrenches.. i just replaced one of mie and learned from a few mistakes along the way, so if you need a step-by-step, let me know.
as far as actually BUYING an axle, you've got a few options.. a brand-new axle from Subaru will run you about $300. you can have your existing axle rebuilt someplace locally.. i'm not sure how much that would cost, but my guess is somewhere around $100, but you'll need to be without an axle for awhile. my personal choice is to purchase remanufactured axles from Marty at Raxles in florida.. he specializes in rebuilding CV axles and does to to higher-than-OEM spec using high quality grease and boots.. Marty charges $150 for an axle.. give him a call at 800-257-8192 and tell him i sent you.. -adam |

Thanks for the help, sounds like something i'll definetly do myself once it gets warmer out. Did you do this with the assistance of a repair manual? or is it easy enough that you dont need one. If you did use a repair manual, which one?
thanks -Alex |

Just picked up by remanufactured axles today. They are going in this weekend.
