Question Tires, Tires, Tires

It's time for new tires. I'm kind of limited on funds so I'm looking at the Yokohama Avid V4's, Continental Conti Touring Contact CH95, or the Sumitomo HTR+'s. I need a tire that can handle a little snow every once in a while and has good treadwear. The Sumitomo's are supposed to have good tread wear but they are a W rated tire so I am kind of skeptical. I've heard the Yoko's don't have great tread wear and are noisy and the Continentals pretty much fall apart after a couple k miles. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

P.S. I already know about the Yoko AVS db's and the Dunlop A2's, unfortunately I will not be able to afford them unless they go on sale (which will probably not happen in a 225/50/16 size.) The only reason I can afford the Sumitomo's is because they are currently on sale (Sears).

Try the Dunlop SP-5000 AS. I have them on my SVX. They are reasonably quiet not as quiet as the Yoko AVS dBs. They have been very good in hard rain. The tread pattern looks like it will handle light snow. I can't give first hand snow experience. It did not snow here last winter. They are relatively inexpensive.

As an OMAGE' to Frank (an old time SVXer), let me say;
"TOYO PROXES"

Dunlop Sport A2

I bought these at my local Discount Tire for $84 each last fall. Good tire. Reasonably quiet, good in the rain and OK in the snow.

I can't speak about your other choices. Have you looked at the reviews section at www.tirerack.com ?

Go to sears.

YOKOHAMA a550Vs

AWESOME tire. Incredible grip. Quiet. All season (or so they say, I haven't used them in snow yet) touring/performance tire. Only 109 dollars each.

GET EM! They're normally 140ish!

Exclamation FYI

I replaced the original Bridgestone RE95's at 70,000 miles, with RE910's almost 60,000 miles ago. They're quiet, cheap, have great grip, and appear to have about a half-life left!

These are the tires that I had on my original SVX. I liked them alot. Trouble is (for those who are concerned) they're "T" rated and the minimum recommendation for the SVX is "V." Just an "FYI."

I agree. I have the same tires.. Love them.

Avoid the Sumitomo's at ALL COSTS!

The RE910's are what came on my car and i just replaced them with the same tires, very very nice in the wet and i have been told they are good in a bit of snow. They are T rated but a T rated tire has a suggested top speed of 129mph, like ill even be doing that in the mountains If you like to do 130+mph get a performance tire, but i rather all year traction than top speed..i know i sound unlike a normal 16y/o

Weird. I've heard nothing but bad things about Toyos.

I had Proxes T1 tires that I liked a lot, but they're the only Toyos I ever had so that's not much of a sample. I had to prior generation, not the "T1s"

Cash,

The Toyo Proxes T1-S tires I put on the SVX are basically summer racing tires that were remade for the street. They had the best grip, wet or dry, of any tire that I ever had in 40 years of driving and that includes a set of Michelin fully studded ice racing tires. I know, I'm not comparing apples to apples. They handled only so so in 6" of snow. I was careful with them in the snow. They were noisy and expensive $732 for 4, mounted & balanced. They lasted approx. 23,000 miles. I don't know if they were worth it but it was expensive fun while it lasted.
They were top quality.

TIRES

I highly recommend Kumho Ecsta Supra 712s. Mandi got these on her car last spring and i am very impressed. Her car had Dunlop SP 8000's. They ROARED. Compared to the dunlops, the Kumho's are a dream. They ride smoother and it's almost like they're not there in the sound department. They have about 20,000 miles on them and they are just starting to show a little wear. I haven't been able to test the snow traction. No snow last year. I got them for $72 a piece off tire rack. That was on sale, i think it's more like $85 now.
