I'd be real leary of calling it unfixable.
You hook up a frame puller to the radiator support, let it sit under moderate tension for about 36-48 hours, and you'll be amazed at what it will look like. Talk to a few owner run shops (not chain shops) and see if they'll do a friday deal. Most shops are empty by Friday noon, so they may cut you a deal on a Friday afternoon frame pull with leaving it sit under tension all weekend. After that, a few panels and a paint job and you are back in business. As for the airbags, get used from someone parting out in a cash deal. I know its not legal, but used parts are just fine for that. If it was me, i'd say screw the airbags, I wear my seatbelt 100% of the time, so I'd suffer more harm than good with an airbag, but some people like them. It would be a real shame to see another one bite the dust for a few thousand in repairs. Doug

To total this car is an outrage. If that were a '60s anything it'd be a hunnert'n fifty bucks at the junk yard, & a weekend with a rubber mallet & couple of cans 'o Dupli-Color. In the near future, any tap on the bumper that blows the airbag will declare the car legally dead.
I'm gonna be sick now. Ron.

Totaled
AS reported another time, my daughter drove my '92 completely under a chain link fence. The estimate was $7500.00. My insurance Co. valued the car at $7500.00. Take off my $500.00 deductible and the salvage value of $900.00 and I got a check for about $6200.00 and I still have the car! The SVX goes in on Nov. 11th for three or four weeks. I keep telling my wife, you can't buy a new car for this kind of monet. Bob

By all means, try to save all the glass. It won't be long that our SVX's will be totaled just by breaking any window. In fact, if you can buy it back for cheap, you can make some real cash. So sorry. Man, I keep thinking, "What would I do?" (I think I know - and it wouldn't be pretty.)

Hmmmmm
Sorry to hear. I think I would kill someone if they hit my SVX. But anyway...
If I had a place to keep it, same year and color as mine...... Oh well. I need a new paint job... can ya send that to me? Scott |

WHAT??!?!?!?
that is ridiculas that your insurance company would total that car...you could probably find pieces of svx's that were in in the oposite area...that you could buy and fix it with.. when i saw totaled, i expected to see a totalled car...if your insurance company calls that totaled...they are crazy!
it is such a shame for you cuz didn't you just get your car? i hope all turns out well, i would so give my insurance company hell.. Kelli

SvxSomeday,
Been there, done that….. see photo! Mine is a 96 Lsi that was also totaled because the parts are so expensive. I bought it back from Allstate for $600.00, found a ’92 for $1700.00 (with a decent body but; bad transmission, CV axles and other stuff), and put the ’96 back together. The only other parts I had to buy (other than paint) were the air-bags (I found them on used-auto-parts.net). It was at the Indiana meet… I think it looks OK now. And the best part, financially, the insurance paid about $3000.00 more than I now have invested in the car! Only problem, it has a “re-built title”. I think you should keep it…. Good luck |

I'd go without the airbags, mine are dead, and have been since i bought the car. The place i got it from didn't have that part fixed when they repaired the car. I probobly could have sued them for something or gotten some money but its almost been a year since i bought it and its probobly too late. What I would do is search for one of the Steering wheels from the JDM model that didn't have an air bag. It would look better and you wouldn't have to replace that part of the car\, saving you probobly 1,000 or so?.

Sorry to hear about that. I'd be interested in the front plastic piece that goes between the headlights if it's still ok. I've got the ugly balck grill piece on mine.

I never hooked it back up, so it's non-fuctional, but it looks better than duct tape on it

SVXsomday,
Was the car actually totaled? Or, did you take the settlement and tell them you would fix it yourself? If it was totaled (i.e. you get a “salvage title”), you might want to check with your state Department of Motor Vehicles before you make any decisions. I had to get my car fixed by a body shop licensed to rebuild a salvage. It had to be fixed back to the condition it was in before the accident, therefore I HAD to buy the air-bags. Then the car had to be inspected (and test driven) before the state would issue a rebuilt title. It was worth the effort… Bill PS- They also checked all the receipts (I guess to make sure the parts weren’t stolen?). |

if you really like the SVX, you'd keep it. everybody thinks there's not a so serious damage. you don't only have one car.....you can drive others first.....check around and get more estimates.....you may find a great deal/way to fix the car half of the price you got.

Total
I'm assuming your ins. co used new parts on that estimate.
If so, demand a new estimate based on LKQ salvage parts (do not accept any aftermarket parts). Salvage parts should come in at 1/3 to 1/2 the cost of OEM new parts, and if they're off cars similar in age and mileage as yours, will be as good as what was on your car before the hit. If your frame is bent, any reputable body shop should be able to pull it back into spec. Don't let ins. co wipe your car based on new part cost. Just as info, most ins cos will total car when parts + labor for repair approach 65-75% of ACV. (ACV=Actual Cash Value, which is book less (or plus) adjustments for mileage, condition/options, etc.) Parts and LKQ assembly labor savings that would result if they used a Salvage right 3/4 sheet metal nose might keep costs below that total threshold. It's worth a shot if you want to keep/fix your car. Good luck! Dan |

Nobody makes aftermarket sheetmetal, nor glass for the SVX, too low of a production vehic. to buy the rights from Subaru and see a return on their money.
