Battery Lessons 101
Never stand by the open hood when starting a car with a newly charged battery.
Always check the fluid level before charging a battery.  Fortunately, the plastic SVX battery tray absorbed the side blast. The neighbors thought I fired my 12 gauge at someone. Lots of baking soda and vinegar used to neutralize the mess.   Bad Gene

With 4 months left on the warranty, Autozone gave me a new battery but, no core credit.
 That is going in my son's race car. The SVX was given a new Optima Red Top with gushing apologies.New battery tray and under hood liner on their way from Subaruparts.com. Old underliner torn and stuck with shrapnel. Gene

Yikes!
Wife's battery died last week (she left the dome light on ), charged it up and its been good. 7-8 year old original factory battery in her Forester.i should probably just replace it .....

What would cause something like that to happen? Manufacturing defect? Low electrolyte level? Overcharging with a faulty charger?
In the pre-"maintenance free" battery days, when charging a battery my father would remove the caps and loosely cover the top of the battery with a wet paper towel. dcb

I can only surmise but, I failed to check the electrolyte (fluid) level before charging. The void space, and maybe exposed lead plates, would have allowed a build up of Hydrogen gas, detonated by my turning the ignition key to start. My father always said check the fluid level and fill with distilled water before charging. He made his own when apple jack was not in season Then again, my charger is 30 years old. Did charge another battery with no problem. The gauge never goes over 5 amps. Thoughts anyone? Gene
