Re: SVX & gps today, 4,22 20121

I guess it's too late, but I have to admit I really like the tomtom's we have now. Free map and traffic updates for life is a nice perk. Seem to get a signal way quicker than my admittedly older garmin. I guess they all have their pros and cons and with so many models coming out from each maker it's tough to say which is the best. I do like the prices lately though. For the cost of a new map you can buy a new nav!

I like to mount mine as low as possible on the windshield to avoid creating a blind spot. That also puts it further away which seems to help with looking at it quick without making your eyes re-focus.

Re: SVX & gps today, 4,22 20121

I thought a bit differently with mounting my GPS and decided to make use of our weirdo windows-within-windows ...........................

.......... it is a Uniden GPS with a 4.3" screen and where it is mounted does NOT obscure the side mirror and checking the screen is no worse than checking the mirror. The extra power lead length required to open the door sits nicely between the door trim and the side of the dash when the door is closed. At the moment it is plugged into the ciggie lighter and I have to get 'round to tidying where I've run the power lead.

For reference this the view from the outside of where the suction cup is.

Please note the photos have been flipped so as to not confuse the majority on the forum who have the steering wheel on the wrong side.

Re: SVX & gps today, 4,22 20121

i really like the Google Nav on my Android phone. always have it with me, and the actual sat-nav photos really help showing landmarks, especially in unfamiliar areas.

whatever nav unit you use, don't leave it in place if you aren't in the car. that's a nice invitation for a smash-n-grab. i wouldn't even suction-cup mount it to the window, as thieves will look for the "rings" on the glass. probably best to suction mount to the dash using the smooth plastic disc most units come with.

Instead I got confused by your fuel level gauge being on the wrong side (and an inverted image). I stared at that pic for a long time trying to figure out how that was possible before I read this last sentence.

Wouldn't thieves then just look for the smooth plastic disc on the dash instead of the "rings"?

Yeah, but maybe not so much if its located between the gauge cluster and drivers side window. The suction cup rings stand out pretty good.

I take that back, ive had black dashes on my last two cars. SVXs have tan or gray, so it would stand out a bit more ........

That would work. I just close the console door to hide my NAV.

Re: SVX & gps today, 4,22 20121

Who steals GPS units anymore???
It's not like they start at $300 for the "cheap" ones like they used to. I think everyone and their grandma has a gps or multiple at this point because they're so cheap.

(I use Google Navigation on my Android phone as well.)
-PS, it's free

If you have a smart phone and a data plan the navigation is free.
