Noise on Deacceleration
Well, I put the 'NEW" used engine in my car and it's working fine. However there is a very strange noise when I down shift. It sounds simialer to something rubbing on some sheet metal at engine speed. I checked the heat shield by the drive shaft and that is all clear. Has anyone had this problem?

I currently do, that is if you can feel it sorta in the gear selector, I was told that there is a possibility of the brake band in the tranny being mal-adjusted...

Would that be the brake band is too tight or too loose? I did tighten the trans brake band another 1/2 turn when I had the engine out. That would be a total of 1-1/4 turns that I have tightened it.
I also get the noise when JAM on the brakes. I am thinking it is not the tranny but something in the engine area. Maybe something is rubbing the flex-plate. |

dunno, I never was able to diagnose the problem, this is just what was presented to me...

same noise?
I just experienced the same kind of thing. Mine would sometimes do it on acceleration too. My problem was a worn out front diff. New tranny. I hope you have better luck than me. Fortunately I had a nearly new spare laying around. Where exactly does the noise sound like it is coming from?

Hi Stephen,
The noise does sound like it is coming from the front of the car. Up near the engine / trans interface. It could be from the front diff. I was trying out a few thing this morning on the way in. Just backing off the gas at 80 would make a very faint sound. I would not even have to down shift. Going over bumps made it louder. However in nuetral it does not make the sound. With traction to the wheels it is quite. It is a light scrapping noise, some what tin'ny and sounds like sheet metal. It is not of a consistant noise level with rotation and sounds similar to something rubbing with a swishy noise. Do you know what actually broke in your front diff? Any sheet metal parts in there? Hey John. I really hope its not, but it sounds remarkably similar to my problem. If it won't do it in neutral, then that is scary. I don't think anything was broken, I think it just wore out. My mechanic said the oil in it looked all wrong, like the previous owner might have put ATF in diff by accident. Mine went from no sound at all to very bad sound in a couple weeks. It sounded like a bearing or rotor/pad problem, but I wasn't so lucky. Good Luck.
