Gotcha. Yeah, like I said, they aren't all bad. It's just that the parts stores near my current residence are in the bad part of town, and seem to employ the lowest common denominator, If I need to, I can drive the 30 minutes or so to a better store, but when I'm elbow deep in grease and grime, I like to be able to just shoot down the road for parts.

Thanks a bunch. That will help me immensely.

Ok, so after tooling around on the car today, here's an update. I decided to take someone's advice and see if i can get the car to run with an accelerant sprayed into the intake. I grabbed my bottle of carb/intake cleaner, had my girlfriend crank the car, and I sprayed it directly into the intake pipe...

...and...

Huzzah! The beast fired right up. And it stayed running until I stopped spraying the carb cleaner into the pipe.

Then I checked some lines. The fuel line going into the FPR was bone dry. Obviously, fuel is not getting from the tank to the engine. So next I folded down the rear seat and lifted the carpet. Tried to listen for any signs of life from the pump, and nothing. Combined with the fact of how the car stopped running suddenly and without warning (and no CEL before the breakdown), and at this point, I am fairly certain that the fuel pump is the culprit.

So, I went to work. Firstly, I figured i could get the pump out through the port inside the car. Got the port opened, all the windows down, trunk and sunroof open, tank vented, the cover taken off, and got to the pump itself. But now it seems to be attached to an entire assembly, and I can't figure out for the life of me, how to get the damn thing out.

Now, I need a little help before I just say screw it and take it to a mechanic. Is there a physical way to get the entire assembly out? I see some plastic tabs, but they don't seem to let loose. If I can't get it out through the port, how much trouble is it going to be to just drop the tank?

Thanks again for all your continued help. I never would have even gotten this far without this forum!

Update #2. I decided to that a good night's sleep would help clear the gas fumes clouding my mind. Apparently, that was a good idea. I climbed back into the car, and had the pump and assembly out in less than 10 minutes.

Drove the Land Rover down to Advance Auto Parts with part number in hand, got the new pump, and brought it home to install. Reinstallation wasn't too hard, and luckily my mechanically-inclined girlfriend has a photographic memory and knew exactly what hoses went where, and got everything put back in place.

Now, the moment of truth...turn the key, crank once, crank twice, crank three times....poof! A small cloud of grey smoke and the engine roared to life. I put some air in the tires, tightened everything down, and took it around the corner to the gas station for a fresh full tank of 93 octane. The car drives just as well as the moment before it died. Having sat for awhile, the brakes have picked up a fair amount of rust, but that will burn off over time. The belts were a little noisy, but quieted down after I applied some belt dressing. The only noticeable difference is that I can hear the rear wheel bearings now. I guess sitting since August or September didn't do them much good. Well, just another reason to wrench on the old beast.

Anyway, thanks again for all the help. I feel very satisfied that I was able to diagnose and fix the problem, and once again have my beloved SVX back to life.

Another one bites the [brakerotor] dust!

Cool, Scott.

It's great to hear you are back on the road again. You diagnosed the problem very well yourself, BTW.

All we did is give you the part number [thanks Keith ] and cheer you on!

Joe

From the sound of the sunroof bit, I'd say he read it on here...
I think it is in SVXFiles' locker... he said he wrote a how to on converting the pump, but i've never been able to find it.

Actually, you all did help in more than the part number. I did lots of searches, read through a bunch of other threads and how-to's, and looked through a few lockers.

So, I'm a living testament to any new person who comes on here looking for advice. Be patient, use the search button, and read as much as you can.

Well, I thought everything was better, but now I have a new problem...

Car ran great all day. I even had it up on jack stands to take a look at the exhaust (nasty rattle from the resonator is the problem). When I went to take it out of the garage, same problem as I was having. It will crank and crank, but will not start. The new fuel pump is still pumping fuel like it should, and I even went so far as to replace the fuel filter. And still nothing.

Now I'm at a complete loss. It will fire up when carb cleaner is sprayed directly into the intake pipe. Fuel makes it from the pump to the filter, and out of the filter just fine. So the fuel is obviously not making it from the filter to the engine. Fuel delivery IS the issue, I'm just not sure of the exact source.

I tossed around the idea of the injectors, but how could all 6 fail at once? My next guess is that there is a problem with ECU. Any ideas of what else i could check for? I love this car, but I'm losing hope in it, and that makes me very sad.

FPR gone bad? It's at the back end of the fuel rail on the passenger's side of the engine.

Great idea Bill. My girlfriend mentioned the same thing as I was walking out the door to go to work (what a girl, right?). So that's going to be my next step.

I do have a question, is the regulator before or after the fuel filter in terms of the flow of the fuel system?
