I'd just like to point out that a public street (intersection, even!) with parked cars along the sides is not a "controlled environment."

So, tell me, does it get 3am? Is there a big parking lot, that would be empty at that time? THIS would be a controlled environment. I'm fortunate, in that, there's this really nice gravel parking lot, less than 1/4mi from me. I got to play with my Leggy to "get the hang of" AWD. That, along with, buying it in the winter.

No, I don't condone what Strafe did, but we were ALL young once. We ALL tried to show off to our friends, in one way or another. He says he learned a valuable lesson, and I for one believe him. I had my share of "AWW S**T" moments as a teen in a car!

Lol.

I had a similar experience when I was 18-19 with my XT6, believing the full-time 4WD made me invincible even in the snow. 3 friends in the car, attempted swerving maneuver, smashed into something and damaged my rear left fender spoiling an otherwise perfect body. I panicked and hit teh breaks instead of hitting the gas to try to avoid it, which I probably could have. I still get teased by my friends about it.

Lesson learned.

Friends eh...odd word for you to use Mr. acquaintances man. But the XT6 was still dope.

You should probably have learned that you should not listen to "FRIENDS" that try to get you to dumb stuff. Don't give in to peer pressure and do something dumb.

Like several before have commented, the street is NOT a place to do these things. If there were cars or anything you could hit around, it is not a good place for you to try something new that may be hazardous to you or friends or your car. How would you have felt if you had smacked a car, or injured someone?

I would hope not, unless the conditions are completely different.

It didn't really sound like that was the case. Like it was mentioned before, the street is not a controlled environment.

If the car means so much to you, why would you treat it like a toy? It is a heavy car and can get out of control and kill. Go to the track or some place that is a controlled environment to do that if you must learn about wet roads.

In life, we seldom get to have "Do Overs" If you had had an accident, you would not have been able to delete the accident. This is the same thing, and it should be left here for others to see and learn about such things. I do hope you have learned your lesson and not that you don't like the reaction that you got by your post. Please think next time.

I've had some of those moments too...most on dry pavement than anything. That was with my Legacy.

There's a time and place for everything. My time and place is an empty parking lot at night with fresh snow, but I have definitely gotten the car sideways around a corner on an empty street before. Quite a few times in fact. Never with the SVX, because we haven't been through a winter together yet, but lots in the Foresters, and even the Taurus (which need no help to get sideways in the snow). Is it a smart thing? Not really. It's wasteful of gas, makes noise, probably annoys people, and would get an interesting reaction from the cops. I know all of that going in. But it's fun, and I think I've learned something from it, how my cars react to abnormal driving and poor conditions. I have a better appreciation of braking distances, cornering response, etc.

I don't condone, encourage, whatever dangerous driving that puts other people at risk, but I do think people can benefit from experiencing something outside the normal "Push-gas-makes-car-go" routine. We actually have a winter driving course here that my friend has taken. Basically it amounts to taking your car onto a frozen lake and driving it with an instructor to learn what things are like in a controlled, sanctioned environment. It's a great experience, and I hope to give it a try with the SVX this winter.
