Running on Moonshine

If I started adding Alcohol to my gas a larger % like every 10 gallons. ( If I added a Qt to 20 gallons today the next fill up I put in 2 QTs and after a few months I was up to 1 gallon per fill up ) would the car adjust to it so eventually it would run on 30% or 50% .

Even if gasoline engines can run on a small % of alchohol w/o causing permanent damage to the engine, I wouldn't use a 10:1 compression high performance motor as your test bed.

Pick up an early 90's Ford Taurus or Tempo for a couple hundred bucks and have at it!

Us guys were just talking at the breakfast table. We could build a still and make our own gas. It would be interesting to see how far the computer would alllow you to do it . Did they not have something called GASAHOL in the 80's. I understand Willy Nelson has his own Veg base fuel

Are you talking about Bio-Diesel? They have machines that make Diesel grade fuel out of plant matter. If I could afford it I would produce hemp diesel

Out here, they still add alchohol to the gas. It is only found in some brands, but it is still used.

I believe he is talking about E-85 (gasahol). This stuff is 85% ethanol instead of the normal 10% at most filling stations. While I do believe the SVX may be able to run on this stuff (high compression is needed to run it), it would be very harmful to the fuel system. I do not think it is a good idea to try. They make cars that are meant to run on this stuff. go to http://www.e85fuel.com/index.php
for more information.

Moonshine probably isn't good either.

It will run on it ok, but the alcohol will disolve nylon and some plastics, that are used in the pump, pick-up filter in the tank, and injectors.

I spent an hour looking for it but can't here is a link to an alternative fuel svx. Someone translated it before but I cant find it. Nor can I link to the exact page, click on technik on the site halfway down the is a claret converted to ethanol I believe.

I'd check on the interaction between Alcohol and the MTBE they put in the wintertime gas in Connecticut before feeding my SVX that cocktail!

Subaru says an ethanol/gasoline blend is okay (up to 10% alcohol, I believe), but methanol is definitely out. Alcohol doesn't pack the same punch as gasoline, so any savings in fuel cost would likely be offset by diminished miles per gallon.

Thanks, Collin. I tried the translator but it didn't work for me.

Revival

i have been researching what it would take to convert an engine to ethanol burning ppower.... according to http://running_on_alcohol.tripod.com/id26.html

theses were the big points:
SPARK QUALITY : "Factory electronic or high-energy ignition is satisfactory. But if your car does not come with this type of system, it is worth obtaining an aftermarket capacitive discharge or electronic ignition unit. These can be installed easily, and they increase the voltage at the spark plugs and keep the plugs cleaner."

piggy back MSD box?

IGNITION TIMING
"Other conditions being equal, the proper timing for an ethanol engine is five to eight degrees advanced from the optimum gasoline setting."

ECU learns for itself?

COMPRESSION RATIO

Ethanol's high octane rating allows a much higher compression ratio (CR) than can be used in a gasoline engine. A typical gas engine these days has a CR of about 8.5 to 1, while a reasonable goal for a converted engine would be 10 or 11 to 1. Increased CR improves engine efficiency. Modified engines in this country have run as high as 14 to 1, but pre-ignition, reduced efficiency, and increased emissions can become problems at such high ratios.

isnt the SVX already like 10:1?

"
7. FUEL VAPORIZATION AND ENGINE WARM-UP

To operate properly, an engine must be provided with a fuel-air mixture that is mostly vaporized. A gasoline engine is designed to provide adequate heat to the intake manifold, from exhaust or cool-ant, to vaporize the fuel; ethanol requires about five times as much heat to vaporize the proper fuel-air mixture than gasoline does.
"

the svx has a coolant line to the throttle body already... it could be made to flow more or something...

the big problem that i see is what harvey stated :

Quote:
It will run on it ok, but the alcohol will disolve nylon and some plastics, that are used in the pump, pick-up filter in the tank, and injectors.

Harvey.
and with this... what if bigger injectors are used (which wiould be ideal since the ethanol has less energy than gas) such as q45 or whatever.. perhaps those would not deteriorate as fast (just speculating)
plus a different pump and pick up filter could be used....

i just am desperately trying to get off my gasoline addiction....
right now i am attemping to build an electric-converted Kawasaki ninjha
and i do not want to part with my SVX... i have the acreage to grow enough corn to make this worthwhile... i could still my own ethanol for a fraction of the gas cost... and when in the off season i suppose i would just grab my nuts and buy the petrol

just adding my idears

BTW
i checked that translated site... and even though it was translated i could hardly understand what it was saying....

oh, i was just also thinking....

WHAT IF, one were to put a sealed fuel cell in the trunk, with just ethanol, and have a separate pump and separate system, with a separate timing map (LAN;s experience would be needed for some crazy plan like thjis....)

I just hate big oil and every day i grow more tired of their "highway robbery"
