There are some of us that are quite knowledgeable about firearms, myself included, but I don't remember anyone being a dealer.

Resellers often don't have much margin. The typically unreasonable costs are from the manufacturer's margins, which are often quite high. Internet resellers have pretty much trimmed it down about as much as possible. Unless you're looking for used stuff, then it's a matter of luck and skillful bargaining.

A rubber backstrap grip is not worth $30. A stamped steel magazine is not worth $45. A flashlight with a special clamp is not worth $175. No fear of Walmartization taking over this market any time soon.

Try Gunbroker.com
Other then that, if there is a particular dealer you buy your firearms or ammo from ask them for a good deal.

do you need an ffl dealer to buy an assault rifle from a private seller?

I know I don't need one to sell it in my paper locally but maybe across state lines is different....

(got an ar-15 for sale here)
