pinion shafts

now i ahve a 94 L series which is fwd. the idiot before me never replaced the axle seals and burned up the front diff. i bought a 01 legacy trans off ebay thinking i could switch up the carrier and pinion and end up w/ a 4.44 gear ratio. well i was wrong, the pinions are different because the trans was newer than mine. i have heard the 97 and 98 legacy transmission had the same gear ratio and the same pinion shaft. can anyone confirm this for me for sure? also to anyone who has regeared their trans what times are you running in the quarter?

You have a 94 Loyale and you want to put a later model ring and pinion in a Loyale FWD? Junk hards have tons of FWD Loyale trans around from 85-94!
But if you want this info,
All the 2.5L transmisson cars have the 4.44 gear ratios and the 2.2L have 4.11. In 99 all cars got the Phase 2 trans like the 01 you have.

Only cause I am trying to help you out. Here is a scan of a 98 Legacy manual. Of course there is a misprint, cause there were no FWD's sold by Subaru in the states in 98.

So there is someone here that has been biatch smacked

Just because I am never wrong! Someone please confirm in a later model SVX (94) owners manual or service manual that the front gear ratio is a 3.70. From what you have wrote you have a pinion from a 94 FWD coming.

So if it is a 3.70 front diff then no it will not work. Cause you would either have to leave the FWD fuse in or change the rear diff to a 3.70. That would not be an easy task. Since only the turbo Loyales were a 3.70.

The truth is I don't know for sure but becouse the pinoin has nothing to do with the AWD clutches I'm thinnking it would work with out a prob. What year/model pinion are you ordering?

Your going for a 4.44 final right?

don't worry bout it, my buddy had a bunch of extra parts at his shop and he hooked me up with all new stuff for free, carrier including ring gear, pinion gear, converter case, and all of the diferential was already toether all i had to do was bolt it up and adhust the backlash and now it's ready to go back in the car, but for anyone else who has been following this thread and is intirested , you should be able to use a pinion out of a 97 or 98 legacy, im pretty sure they were the same shaft and had the 9 tooth gear for the 4.44
