4.11 gears & the SVX
I've read once or twice, that the 4.11 gears from an Impreza, aren't a good match for the SVX. I like to go fast, but I'm not a big time leadfoot. Besides, I have my Pinto if the aggressive driving bug hits.
Would it be in my best interest to swap the 3.56 gears into the new trans? Will the 4.11's be ok, as far as longevity. Remember, I'm a no budget kind of guy. I can afford to repair the car, but not replace the big things. IE: engine/trans. Perhaps some of the Gurus can chime in with advice.

Let me be the first to toss my "hat" into this.
If you want 4.11 go to a manual do not mess with a 4.11 auto. If you want to stay with an auto go with 4.44 out of Legacy. I have killed many of 4.11, this is my 6 trannies, 2 were professional rebuilds. When I get her back I will be driving very little and gathering parts for a 5 or 6 speed manual. I hope this will help your decision. Steve

Depends
Depends on what you mean by "I like to go fast". Stock gears are great for high speed highway driving and even good cruising speeds. If you like to go fast from light to light--well--no detailed comment, but my opinion is generally get another car besides the SVX.

Going fast is more about conservation of momentum, than acceleration.
I love my SVX, and I'll be saving for a 5spd swap. The engine is still VERY strong, and the rest of the car is very solid as well. I could use struts, but they're not gone yet. For a 12 yr old car with nearly 1/4million miles it's amazing. That's my nice way of saying "they'll pry my SVX from my cold, dead fingers". A fair amount of searching has yielded many inexpensive ways to fix things. For what I've got in it, I can afford one tranny, and some other fixes, I've already done. I just can't be replacing big stuff regularly.

Hmm, that's an interesting bit of info. I was considering 4.11's myself, and have no interest in a 5-sp swap. So, you'd say steer clear of the 4.11's, eh?

ANY transmission with lower gears will hold up better in a SVX than the stock's, just due to it having less stress on the transmission internals, which in turn causes less heat build up, = longer life in a tranny.
So 4.11's are the second best 4EAT for a SVX 4.44's being the first. The only time the 3.54's are best is if all you do is interstate driving, the more start and stop you drive, and the more hilly the region you live in, the better lower gear will be for longevity. Plus, lower gears are just WAY more fun in a SVX Miss-matched tires cause more tranny deaths than anything else. IMHO So Paul, if you're really worried about it, put the 4.44's from the Legacy in it, and just leave the 4.11 hooked up to this 2.2, and drop them into the Legacy together.

Hard to say which ones, just have to check out the numbers on one when you find it......and yes, you'll need the rear diff to swap ring and pinion parts to make a 4.11 LSD for the SVX

I was able to find the gear ratio by searching the tranny #s at the USMB.
