The thingy scratching my window
Looks like it used to have a pad there.
How do I get to it? I suppose this would involve removing the glass? Seems it's only being held by two bolts. Is this right? My glass guys said they could fix the scratching, I just need to cure the source of the problem...

Re: The thingy scratching my window
you'll need to remove the inner guides and unbolt the window from the regulator assembly to get the window out. Then those particular guides just clip into the door frame. New guides will cost you between $30 and $40 per front window, or you could try covering them with something that may work better since the stock felt guides trap dirt and causes the windows to scratch anyway.

Re: The thingy scratching my window
The inner guides apparently do not even touch the glass so I think I can just swap them over.
It's only scratched on the outside. In other news, I discovered my outer door handle surround is what has been making this squeaking noise that has been driving me crazy. At the same moment I contemplated changing the lock illumination color.

Good point.
Looking at it again I think the curvature of the window dictates which side is touching, which would explain why the scratches don't go all the way up.

Re: The thingy scratching my window
Since you already have one door apart - why not go the whole hog & do the other side, that way you can compare doors on-site....

Re: The thingy scratching my window
I have to get into the other door anyway because the window switch only works in the down position.
Need to put that on my SVX to-do list.

Re: The thingy scratching my window
You can clean out the felt pads, brush them in the opposite direction with something pointy and metal. I think I used a drywall screw.

Re: The thingy scratching my window
Is there any mod that can be done to fix this problem. I never had scratched windows until I owned a subaru.

Re: The thingy scratching my window
No mod is necessary. Just clean up the pads and keep the windows clean, avoiding running them up and down when they're dirty. It's odd that Nik's are scratching the inside of the glass, as every one I've seen was on the outside. We just swapped the badly scratched driver side window in my '97 for the much better piece from my '93, and the hardest part was getting the window to seal correctly as it closed fully. Two people are almost a must, with one holding the glass firmly in position while the attachments are tightened. My $.02.

I've made it a point to keep a container of glass wipes so I can wipe the window down in the event I want to use it.

*bump*
Has a long term fix for this been developed? I live in the desert (read:dust). Constantly wiping the glass just so I can use the window lift would be an hourly exercise here. -Mike O |

Re: The thingy scratching my window
OEM replacements are inexpensive, appear to be a simple clip in installation, once you have removed the door panel and, most likely the glass. Until then, I have been just using a plastic artist's spatula and, finding the two locations, working in the car cleaner when washing, making sure the door drain holes are open when doing a force rinsing.

Re: The thingy scratching my window
I took a look at this problem. I wonder what they were thinking. I had never before seen a window lift mechanism that rubs the visible glass area deliberately.
So I am working on a simple mod to replace these rubbing blocks with a long section of pile seal. It should be stable due to the large contact area and won't be capable of abrading the glass. - Mike O |
