My 1996 does not have an external Tranny filter... Is it supposed to?

Hello all,

After rooting around under my 1996 LSi, I realized that I do not have an external tranny filter. Is that normal? I ask because I keep seeing posts for a "campaign filter" and my car certainly does not have one in that location (left frame rail below the battery).

Is this something I should add while I'm in there? I am planning on replacing the internal filter this week, so it wouldn't be too much trouble to plumb one in. Thanks.

Clarke

Only the 92 got that filter, it was part of a recall. They fixed the design problem on the later years so they did not need them. Now whether you should add one or not is a matter of some debate.

Re: My 1996 does not have an external Tranny filter... Is it supposed to?

OK, so I did some more searching and I think I answered my own question. Please correct me if I'm wrong:

The Campaign Filter was only added to earlier SVX's that had a screen build into the stock tranny cooler in the radiator. It was this screen that could eventually clog and cause the fluid overheat. The later model radiators did not have this screen and did not require the extra filter.

Sound right?

If so, I'd really like to get my hands on one of those factory filters and mounting hardware... I like things to look stock

no external filter, internal
few subarus have an external, my 03RS had one luckily which made a tranny flush cheap in labor

If you don't add it, it will be stock, as all SVSs after 92 came from the factory that way.

Even the 92s originally came stock from the factory that way. The filter was only an add-on to correct a problem.

Well yea, sure... I was referring to a stock looking oil cooler, not a stock configuration. If I add a tranny filter, I'd like for it to be a factory Subaru part or kit instead of some shiny aftermarket item. It's no big deal, I'll just go with an aftermarket one.
