Uhggg, I think my transmission is done!

Started slipping today and went downhill fast. I'm even wondering if I can make the 4 mile trip home, I had a feeling it was coming but it is still a shock when it happens.

(May be posted in the wrong section, mods can move if so.)

Re: Uhggg, I think my transmission is done!

Well no, not exactly, it has been flaring a bit. I wasn't really sure if I was having an issue or not so I had been driving it around to try to tell. Today completely removed those doubts. The car did have a cooler but I believe it is the original transmission, although I'm not sure. I'm going out to check to see if the fluid is low or burnt.

I think I am going to try to sell a my Sti BBS wheels and various other parts to try to raise some funds. (Look for a post in the parts for sale soon.)

I know some guys around here who might be able to do your trans if you can come up with one.

Re: Uhggg, I think my transmission is done!

What cooler did you install and is it in series, parallel or bypass?

In July 09 I installed a Hayden total bypass cooler #242016.
This is after a new in pan filter drain and fill earlier in the same year.
We also put in 5.5 quarts BG Products ATF in November 2010.

Re: Uhggg, I think my transmission is done!

How many miles? That really sucks man I'm sorry to hear about that. If 2nd gear sticks around then you might still be able to use the car for some time.

Sean did not ignore his SVX!
So he shouldn't have had flow restrictions problems or heat problems. Did he get 147K on the original tranny or did a rebuilt tranny fail? If it was a rebuilt, how many miles did he get on it before his unfortunate issues popped up? I guess what I am wondering is if the cooler and synthetic ATF helped extend the life, had no effect or, worst case, had a detrimental effect? Being a 1992, if it had 147K on the original tranny, that would be very encouraging with regards to what he did to prevent or delay this event.

Good luck Sean. I hope you are able to get this repaired at a good price.

Re: Uhggg, I think my transmission is done!

Sorry to hear of the transmission troubles.

I bought my car with a trans rebuilt 2 years before I bought it, and a new front diff one year before I bought it, and the damn shop that put in the new diff cracked the plug for solenoid C and didnt even bother plugging it in. I imagine when the pulled they rear housing off they didnt unplug the connector. I just finally got time to pull this apart and replaced the clutches and the solenoid.

We were speculating that it is the original transmission mainly because it didn't have a blue torque converter in it. If I could have properly adjusted the brake band as soon as I felt something strange it may have lasted a bit longer. I had the How to Doc, but hadn't tried it yet.
I bought the car 3 years ago assuming that I would eventually have to replace the transmission. It kind of sucks, but was not completely unexpected and I am looking forward to having 4.44 gears installed.

Then that would be pretty good! Maybe you set a record for 1992 tranny longevity?!

Keep your head up. You are in good hands and better days are ahead.

Surely some have lasted longer than that.

My teal's transmission was supposedly "rebuilt" shortly before the previous owner let go of the car; so said the dealership's Internet sales dude... who, as it turned out, failed to divulge that the car had a cracked radiator top and toasted (read: DEAFENING) rear wheel bearings. There was no supporting documentation.

So, who knows? I just check the fluid every once in a while, and drive. 56,000 miles and counting.

Good luck with the replacement, Sean.

Re: Uhggg, I think my transmission is done!

Been 2 weeks now since my transmission went out. I am really starting to miss the SVX and in general have been a little down. I guess I have really become attached to this car. I have been making some progress though and I think I will soon have a low mileage replacement for it.
The goal is to pick up a 4.44 transmission by the end of next week and make arrangements to get it down to SVXFiles soon after.
I have sword off beer until after it is repaired, so each day without gives me more motivation. (or is it desperate need)

You sure its the SVX your missing? Maybe you weren't asking about 3As for towing but 2As for... Hello my name is Sean and I have a problem. Haven't seen ya skiing yet. I was there yesterday. In fact, I've been skiing every Thursday since they opened. Gotta love comp time. Almost as good as if I got overtime.
