Thinking about installing a leather kit

Has anyone installed a leather kit for their interior recently? I am debating on doing this, however, I haven't been impressed with the pics I have seen of the leather kits installed, there always appears to be areas of the seats that are somewhat wrinkled, is having a wrinkle here or there inevitable with a leather kit? I am looking to have them look like new oem seats without having to pay the $1200 + for each seat from the dealer.

I've got an old writeup of my leather seat install in my Legacy <here>. In the pictures there, you can see a few places where they're off just a bit. The middle parts are supposed to look that way - they're "gathered". You can buy them plain, as well.

Besides that you won't have it available until it's done, the driver's seat is the one you're going to see the most. It should be done last, when you've got the most technique down.

You probably won't do the whole car in a day. This job is a lot of work on your hands! The hog rings can be a real workout.

I received many compliments on the leather. Naturally, you'll know where every flaw is, but most people won't see them!

I'd consider opening the seats up, either reskinning them or just replacing the original leather, if I decided to install seat heaters.

I have had leather interiors professionally installed in a few of my cars over the years. When I first picked up the first car I had redone, I noticed some wrinkling in the leather.

The installer told me that nothing was wrong or installed incorrectly, but that the leather was new and hadn't shrunk to its final shape. After having the seats in the car for about a week (during the summer), all the wrinkles had disappeared and everything was perfectly smooth and taut.

When I had leather put in the Legacy GT in the late winter, there were no wrinkles in the leather when I picked up the car. The same installer had used a heat gun to shrink the leather to its final form.

Dayle has leather kits for the SVX that closely match our interiors and I am sure that if a professional installer did the work and used a few of these tricks, wrinkling wouldn't be a problem.

John, I've heard that a heat gun or a steamer helps to work out the leather interior (even heard of some people stuffing cotton in there to get rid of the wrinkles!!). I've considered dayles but his "slate gray" OEM style seats seem to light compared to the stock 92 Claret's gray...my 92's gray that I am certainly sure are quite faded are darker than his. I'd prefer to go with a dark charcoal...I am currently looking at www.leatherseats.com and www.adt1.com for possible leather suppliers.

Dayle will ship you his leather color sample swatches for a refundable $25.00. Click HERE for more details.

Usually leather gets darker over the years as the oils age and it attracts dirt and other pollutants. I once ordered a headrest new from the dealer for my pearlie and was surprised how much lighter it was than the factory leather which was about 10 years old. I returned it and eventually found a used one with the right amount of "aging" on it.

same can be said with the pleather armrests found on the L models. I recently installed a piece for someone, and was suprised at the color diffrence

The suede does the opposite, and fades over time

The wrinkles are normal. Look in the old sales brochures at the NEW svx's...the seats have all kinda of baby fat to them.

red gray leather

I purchased the red/gray leather from Dayle I think around 7-9 years ago I guess but the leather is of very high grade.People see the engraved svx and thinks its says SVT,also shops charge around 400 dollars to do the job,but I had the entire job done in about 6 hours,I made a small error with the drivers lower leather aligning with the upper seat but thats really small considering I had never did that type of work before. Here is the funny part when my boxes arrived I was really mad because I expected entire seats done up in leather, after calling Dayle who really is a great guy convinced me into keeping the leather, also I installed a brushed alum. dash kit and some fancy floor mats.Last thing my drivers side seat shows a little wear but I plan on replacing the fronts anyway with some Bride racing seats,so ahead and get that leather.
