Very heavy snow in Hampshire
Well the SVX certainly proved itself to be an outstanding car in very heavy snow tonight as we drove back from a job in Worthing, with care it just wafts past cars going nowhere on hills and slipping it into D 1 to descend hills provided you don't touch the brakes is wonderfull in fact I took it out again to get some shopping essentials this evening and where I live has about 5 steep hills and downward slopes and I was able to weave through the abandoned cars with such ease.

Re: Very heavy snow in Hampshire
Plenty snow here in Durham,I think my SVX is as good if not better than my Audi A5 3.0 TDI Quattro (maybe because the tyres are not as wide)

Re: Very heavy snow in Hampshire
I don't have my one on the roads at present. When I did it was excellent at traveling up hills in the Dublin mountains even on sheet ice.
At the time I felt it was the gearbox electronics that were doing the smart apportioning of the torque and grip. The usual caution and care is needed going down hill, particularly. Once a certain amount of momentum is gathered [if grip is lost] then the Laws of Physics come back with a crunch.

Re: Very heavy snow in Hampshire
From my days when I used to do a bit of messing about at AWDC events I learnt that touching the brakes on downhill descents resulted in a loss of control. By keeping the car in Manu I'm able to adapt quite well to conditions so putting it in 1 to go downhill seems to control the speed and keep it low enough not to build any momentum. It does put a smile on my face to see people wondering how a car that looks like the SVX just wafts effortlessly past them when they are frantically spinning their wheels to get grip.

Re: Very heavy snow in Hampshire
The worst cars on snow seem to be Mercs. I've seen literally dozens of them spinning their wheels and going nowhere. I guess it's a combination of too much inertia, rear wheel drive, fat tyres, and open diffs.
In my Legacy I can't even tell that there is snow and ice on the road, it just drives like normal. Most of the time I dislike driving the Legacy, but in the present conditions, I'm loving every minute of it.

Re: Very heavy snow in Hampshire
Its funny you should mention Mercs because apparently the sneaky little boys in blue stuffed their unmarked Merc estate into the back of a Subaru the other day on the A27.

Re: Very heavy snow in Hampshire
I've just been on a training event in Yorkshire for a couple of days, spent way too much time in airports.
One of the sales guys came from Dundee, but could not get his BMW 3 series to climb out of the hotel car park. Same as the Merc problem Phil mentioned I'm thinking. Wide rear tyres, loads of torque and possibly front weight bias with rear drive. Rear drive cars probably earn their reputation as drivers' cars in any other conditions than snow or ice. What makes them good on dry or wet roads works against them in low grip situations. [Although, having said that, I would expect if you fitted a set of narrow grippy M&S tyres on them you could have yourself some fun!] Joe

Re: Very heavy snow in Hampshire
FWD or AWD rules in bad grip, eh John?
My Mitsubishi RVR wagon which is FWD performed better than expected on the bad roads. Even the tiptronic transmission was a help, contrary to expectation. Yesterday morning early my wife was diverted off the M7 near Portlaoise because a car mounted a bank, rolled over and went on fire. The 26 yo driver did not survive. He may have hit a patch of ice the gritters missed, or maybe his speed was too high for a margin of error, tough luck Take care out there fellas. This crap weather is not done with us yet. Joe

Re: Very heavy snow in Hampshire
Over the last few weeks I have noticed a great number of 4x4's locally (20+) with frontal damage. As I said I used every chance to go out in the snow and despite solid packed snow on the roads the SVX did not get stuck once but a few times I had 4X4's literallly tailgating me, so I carefully pulled over and allowed them past every one seemed to pass at what I would consider a break-neck speed for the road conditions it would seem they thought that the 4x4 they were driving was imune to a loss of grip.

People who have these muckle 4x4's must own a white van too, after having been ran into at the rear, it's no laughing matter and it's some bang BTW!......I tap on the brake lights or even put on the hazard lights now if I get folk trying to share my petrol, but your right, anything short of an air brake (parachute), then we're all in the same boat when it's comes to stopping! rant over! Re: Very heavy snow in Hampshire
Same over here. 4x4s with dinged wings and lights everywhere.
And white vans. In the case of the vans, they don't own them so the don't give a f... In the case of the Jeeps, they don't know any better so don't deserve any less. Joe
