Unfortunately, the laser assemblies in CD players are pretty delicate, and heat, dust, and use degrade their performance until ultimately they have to be replaced. They also have a very definite life cycle, and eventually just plain wear out no matter how careful you are with them.

I'm amazed that the stock player in my '92 SVX does so well. I've had CD players at home that haven't lasted anywhere near this long.
