check engine light

I have a 92 with 77,000 miles. I am away at college now so my car sits for weeks at a time without being driven. When I go home and drive it around the check engine light comes on. It seems to only be on when the car is idling. When I press the gas it goes off. I have not worried about this too much since I rarely drive it. Any thoughts on this? Could it be a moisture problem?

Could be low voltage, your battery would run low after a few weeks.

Does it stay off when you have driven a bit, like when the regulator has charged up the battery? Or will it come back on again at idle?

Get a battery shop to check your battery. If one of the cells was weak, it would continue to not charge properly. If you need a new battery, and the light goes away, that's it fixed.

If it's not the battery, suspect the alternator. You can also do a search here to see how to run engine codes, if something is wrong it would show a code.

Hope this helps,

Joe

I think if you had a charging problem, you'd see different lights - either the charging light or, well, all of them.

Does your car idle okay when you first start it? If the revs bounce or lope at all, you might have a problem that's worth having a shop look at.

But if your car idles just fine, your symptoms wouldn't concern me at all, considering your driving habits and climate. If there's a significant temperature difference between the time you park it and the time you drive it again, you can see the CE light come on. Since yours only comes on while the car idles, I suspect that's the issue.

But I could be completely full of it.
