First Outback problem

Our 2010 with 160,000 miles has been a trouble-free car without one problem. Great gas mileage, no codes ever, As expected, on our second set of brake pads and our third set of tires. Oil change every 5 weeks, tire rotation every other oil change, etc. You know the routine.

Got my first flat tire in 15 years. Ran over over something in the road last night that gave me a blowout on the left rear. TPMS came on and I heard the flopping tire noise so immediately pulled over to the shoulder. No big deal, just put on the temp spare and on my way... so I thought.

4 of the lug nuts came off with no problem, one with lock. The fifth started to move and then got very hard to turn (with the factory lug wrench) Moved ever so slightly under hard pressure so I stopped before I broke a stud.

Called AAA and they came out to assist. Mechanic put on a 24" breaker bar on the nut and slowly got it turning. After a few turns and no obvious movement, it was obvious that the stud was stripped out and turning in the hub. No way to get that wheel off and change it. Tightened it all back up and had it towed to my house, where it sits.

I have seen cross-threading before and thought that is what this was. I have broken a stud or two, but never had one refuse to break and turn in the hub.

How to you get the nut off or get the stud out without taking off the wheel first? You can't break a turning stud.

Any suggestions.? I am sure this is not a first. Tires were rotated about 6,000 miles ago.

Re: First Outback problem

oxy/acet torch... Burn it out... More than likely gonna do some damage to the finish of the wheel but it will come off. Either that or a high powered air gun to try and break it...

Re: First Outback problem

Cut the lug nut or drill out the stud from the back. Either one isn't real easy but then you take the bill and drop it off at the garage who does (or used to do) your tires and rotations. That is what a moron with a impact gun will do so I wouldn't trust them fixing the problem either.

Re: First Outback problem

I don't think you can do that. I just looked at the wheel on our 2012 Outback. You can't drill it from the back because of the dust shield etc. The lug nuts are countersunk into the rim so there is no way to cut them. As you say it must have happened before to other folks. I would try calling a reputable wheel/tire shop.

P.S. Shish you do a lot of driving!

Re: First Outback problem

You can get it from the front, just drill through the center of the nut. Make sure you use a punch to get it started. Start with a small bit and gradually increase.
Found a nice little write up.

It's a Subaru with 160k on the odo. The dust shields should have long since rotted off. If not some tin snips will work. As for the countersunk lug nuts you can still cut them. Just need the right tools. Sadly in the end it is probably cheaper to source a decent used wheel for that $100-125 range and simply cut the rim off as you'll have quite a bit in labor if you take it to a shop. Oh right, I mean a new rim and 4 new tires as the bill is going to his inept tire shop.

Re: First Outback problem

As far as the "idiots" who did this, it was Russel Subaru. In the 13 years I have been buying cars from them, or getting them serviced, I have never had a problem and have always been extremely happy with their work. I replaced the tires with OEM at around the time of my first brake job, as I wanted to keep the original ride.

Bob Hill, one of the few remaining SVX Master Techs, and the rest of the service staff have always done things right. They must have rotated the tires on this Outback at least 20 times.

I'd be happy about the work they did this time too. I'm sure they had a master tech rotating the tires as that is quite common place around dealers these days. Also, my guess is the moron who did it then wasn't able to put a torque wrench on the lug and get it to click which to me is even less settling with the quality of the work. I'll be curious if they stand behind their screw up. From my experience with Subaru dealers, they're just a step above used car buy here/pay here dealers and VW stealerships on the striper pole.

Come on now, it's a 2010. To rot off that quick he'd have to be driving in salt water on the beach all summer and salty roads all winter and parking in a heated garage.

ever been to Maryland and the DC area? They salt the roads with more salt than a brine tank.

Re: First Outback problem

John, sorry to hear about your dilemma, that is a first for me to. It could have been worse, it could have been your prized mean green sparkling machine on the way to Reading. Good luck my friend, and have Russell Subaru cook you up a nice breakfast while your there

Re: First Outback problem

Talked to Russel Subaru over the phone. They are taking responsibility for it and giving me a new Outback as a loaner. I'll have AAA tow my Outback there there. Russel said they would also reimburse me for any extra towing charges.

As long as its there, I will also get a brake job, since I have 80K on the pads anyway. I am sure they will check everything else out very well.

I would think a lugnut torqued down so tightly would have snapped the stud before it stripped inside the hub. We'll see...
