97 Leg. Outback wagon - Anyone need any cheap parts before I scrap the car?

Title says it all. Got an offer for $500 scrap if I drive the car in. If anyone needs any parts that are non essential to me driving the car in, post here let me know. Open to reasonable offers. Or if anyone wants to take the whole car for parts.... I accept paypal, and ship via UPS or priority mail, whichever is cheapest.

I'd sell the entire car for $1000 cash OBO. I have over double that into the car, and trade in is still $1700 with the high miles, so...

Re: 97 Leg. Outback wagon - Anyone need any cheap parts before I scrap the car?

For anyone who may be considering purchasing the car whole, more info:

1997 Legacy Outback, auto, 316050 miles. Tranny replaced with Subaru certified reman (as listed on reman tag) 01/2003. ~180k miles on reman that is now failing.

List of everything I have personally done (I have receipts):

5/14/12 Purchased vehicle at 312,285 miles
5/14/12 Seafoam gas tank 16 oz 312,300 miles
5/14/12 Seafoam oil 8 oz 312,325 miles
5/15/12 Seafoam intake 8 oz 312,375 miles
5/15/12 Changed PCV valve 312,375 miles
5/16/12 Changed Oil - Castrol Edge (black) 10w30 full synthetic, Purolator PureOne PL14460 filter 312,425 miles
5/24/12 Changed spark plugs - Denso Platinum TT 312,615 miles
6/13/12 Replaced right front wheel bearing and hub ~313,200 miles
8/10/12 11 oz. BG Quick Clean through trans (estimated mileage on tranny 180k) 315,551 miles
8/12/12 Replaced trannsmission filter/8.5 qt fluid (Champion filter kit/BG Products Universal Synth ATF) 315,586 miles
8/12/12 11 oz. BG Products ATF Plus shift conditioner 315,586 miles
8/25/12 Replaced front lower control arm inner rear bushings (Whiteline urethane WL51710) 315,875 miles

Body ~7/10, interior 6.5-7/10 (fabric needs steam cleaned, vinyl shines up nicely)

The timing and water pump were replaced by previous owner ~25000 miles ago. Radiator was replaced with a brand new one ~7000 miles ago. Newer brakes/rotors at all 4 corners (~80% pad left). I do not have records for any of this, however I can put you in touch with the gentleman that owned the car previous to me and he can confirm.

Windshield is OEM I believe, will have to double check. It is a little bit rough but is in tact (no chips/cracks that I've noticed). Does not have the weather band radio, its a base model (not limited). Body color is Ruby Mica.

You could always take the whole car off my hands, what with you being pretty local and all I'll make ya a good deal

Re: 97 Leg. Outback wagon - Anyone need any cheap parts before I scrap the car?

Sounds like a good parts car, and a great scrap price. I paid $1200 for my 99 Outback with 195k last year, now has 218k, so its got plenty of life left in it, just got to fix all the oil leaks. Mine has the weather band radio, but the light burnt out, cant see a damn thing at night

This car still has tons of life left in it, just needs the tranny honestly. I'd love to see it sell as a complete car and stay on the road. I'm only the 3rd owner, and the previous owner only put 20k on the car over 2 years. The rest of the mileage and maintenance/repairs was done by the original owner. And bonus, there are no leaks! (well, outside of the oil fill neck gasket, but its a 35 cent part from the dealer and doesnt do anything but make the front corner of the valve cover look dirty after an oil change)

As for the radio, I wonder if that is a common problem. The backlight for the display on mine is burnt out too. AFAIK its not the weatherband radio, but it may well be (if the original died and someone put a boneyard one in from a Limited that is).

Scrap price, I had to shop the car around to the different scrappers to find that good of a price, and its only valid if I drive the car in. If they pick up, its $350 (even though they say free towing ). I have to drive an hour away as well to get that price. Called 5 places yesterday morning and basically pitted each of their offers against each other. Just like dealing with a stealership for a new car lol

If you part it out, I could use the rear struts and the cupholder.

Re: 97 Leg. Outback wagon - Anyone need any cheap parts before I scrap the car?

I have a couple of people interested in the car as a whole right now, but I will let you know if I do end up parting it out I'd let the cupholder and rear liftgate struts go for say $40 shipped? I took another look at the rear lift struts, they have some minor surface rust on them at the mount points but nothing major (more just rust scale than anything, flakes away pretty easily to show shiny metal beneath)

For anyone interested, I have photos of the car I can email over and can take more if need be.

Re: 97 Leg. Outback wagon - Anyone need any cheap parts before I scrap the car?

Haven't heard back from any of the interested parties on sale of the car as a whole, open to parting it out at this point.

Anyone that would like parts, PM me with offers. Open to OBO, need to get things squared away ASAP with this car so I can get something else, and get some cash flowing for some important personal matters.

I can ship same day as paypal received, or local pickup is always an option (if you decide to pick up in person, you are welcome to pull items yourself and I'll cut you an even better deal) Going to the scrapyard at the end of the week (unless someone takes it off my hands). Shame to scrap it, tons of good parts on this car.

Re: 97 Leg. Outback wagon - Anyone need any cheap parts before I scrap the car?

Car is pending sale.

On another note, I now know what its like when the clutch packs fail and bind in these transmissions I can drive the car forward when its in park If I have it figured out properly, the clutch packs bound up and stuck the car in 2nd/3rd. when in 1, it doesnt move. 2 acts like low gear, 3 acts like 2, drive acts like 3rd. I have to drive the car with the shifter in neutral and alternate between N and D. Took it in to have it looked at and couldnt get out of the parking lot. Lucky I even got it home the 5 miles, the last mile was uphill and I had to drop it from N to D because it sounded like bearings in a blender.

Seems to be that the yellow metal shavings I found in the pan when I did the new fluid were a bushing for the planetary gears that got chewed up, coupled with the failing clutch pack(s)...

I'm officially jumping the Subaru ship for awhile lol

Umm, that's not clutch packs bound up. Binding is when the AWD binds and it acts like a 4wd truck. Your linkage is off by the sounds of it.

May very well be, but I'm pretty certain that's not the only issue. When I went to get out of the parking lot at my friend's shop yesterday, I couldn't push it backwards, all 4 wheels were locked up in. We had to jack the car up and move it on jacks to be able to swing around so I could get out. Coupled with the jerking and banging, even with fwd fuse, Mike said it sounds like theres more than one problem with the trans (considering when I did the fluid a few weeks back there was yellow metal flakes in the pan, some the size of a nickel). He said it sounds like a combination of bound clutches as well as a blown bearing for the gear set.

I have my eye on a second gen Escort wagon right now (eww lol), and worse comes to worse I'll buy another Subaru. Keeping eyes out for a 2.2 auto Legacy wagon, there's a couple around in decent shape for my price. Also looking at a few Fozzy's but we'll see. Not against the idea of another Subie, but given my track record so far with them...

Btw, got a call from you yesterday, sorry I missed ya. Tried calling back but not sure if my cell is boned or not, as soon as you picked up I lost the call. Give me a call, let me know whats up. I'll be around all weekend off and on, I'm working but will have my cell on me.

Re: 97 Leg. Outback wagon - Anyone need any cheap parts before I scrap the car?

Been a crazy week, but the car went off to its new home (and Legacy, pun intended ) last Sunday. Engine will live on in the buyer's 97 Outback with 316k and kicking hard Shame to see it go, already missing the feeling of driving a subaru... Considering price of a replacment tranny though, the smart money was on a new car...

Eying up my replacement options: A 2 owner 97 Legacy L Brighton with 2.2/auto at 140k miles (comes with 3 month warranty with optional bumper to bumper for 1 year at $90 extra), or a 96 Volvo 2.4NA/auto 850GLT estate wagon (fully optioned with side air bags) with 139k miles. Kinda leaning towards the Volvo honestly but I'm going to miss the awd, I know it....handling is just so much better IMHO with awd over fwd...

If it has heated seats I'd be interested in the heating elements and the wiring harness.
