Help! Broken Trans Rear Housing(pics)
so its my day off today, and i went to my moms house where my subaru is parked to replace the rear seal on the trans, the one that the drive shaft slides into. it was slightly out of round, and had been leaking so i decided to replace this, in hopes of curing my transmission problems(in another thread. i got the exhaust and driveshaft off, and pulled off the cover that goes over that end of the trans, the small cup sized cover and the photos show what i found. the missing piece was sitting in there behind small cover i removed, so i have that, but its def broken.
what can i do? will the new seal take care of everything? will it leak? it turns out my small leak wasnt small at all, the whole underside of the car is coverd with spray of trans fluid from the driveshaft flinging it everywhere. i checked the level this morning, and it was a quart low, i guess it makes sence that i was constantly checking and adding. so what do i do? the part thats still there next to the missing chunk is still bent, and im pretty sure itll crack if i try to straighten it out. Re: Help! Broken Trans Rear Housing(pics)
NOOOOOOOO! is that my only option? i thought this may be the case after i posted this, so i removed all the bolts to the rear housing on the old trans i removed, as it looked great. so if thats my option, then im already 25% there. nothing else to do then?

Re: Help! Broken Trans Rear Housing(pics)
lol, sounds good to me. new problem is the rims. i had the chrome stock ones, but since my brother didnt take care of them, theyre peeling. when i had the tires mounted and the lips cleaned and sealed, i dont think they did anything but seal and mount the tires. they go flat in a few hours. it sucks driving around with a tank in your trunk, lol. got a spare tps by chance?

Re: Help! Broken Trans Rear Housing(pics)
there is another solution. if a section of thats only missing get some wiremesh fill the gap and fill it with JB-WELD. My friend did patching like that on the intake of his 406 when they bored too far. Once the stuff hardens you can just file it smooth.

Re: Help! Broken Trans Rear Housing(pics)
put the old seal back in place - run a clip (like adjustable large hose type around the edge) - no so tight as to deform into missing section.
Then work some JB-WELD joint stuff into missing area - wait till dry. remove seal first, then unscrew the adjusable clip...... (then hope like hell) sorry my 2 pennies worth from down under... |

Re: Help! Broken Trans Rear Housing(pics)
how long do you think that wound take to cure to the point of being driveable? less then swaping the rear housings? the other bolts came out in less than 2 min on the other trans, and looking at my pics, i think these will be quick, but then i have to swap the trans mount, and that sensor, and all that good stuff. i can get some jb from work, and i do also still have the missing chunch in its entirety. any thoughts? i was going to go to my moms at 6 am to do this, but maybe this will work.

In a world where tailshaft housings are available, you buy a gasket, a rear seal, pull it apart, slowly watching for the green wire with the brown connector, that has to be unclipped, and fix it right! And yes, you can do this with the trans in the car.
